Rustem Pasha Mosque History and Architecture
The Rüstem Pasha Mosque (Rüstem Paşa Camii) is located at the end of Uzunçarşı (Long Market) Street. Uzunçarşı dates back to the Byzantine period, a long porticoed mall stretching downhill from the Forum of Constantine (Beyazıt) to the Golden Horn.
Nowadays Uzunçarşı is still busling with people, who are shopping from traditional street shops. Rüstem Pasha Mosque is frequently used by the local shop-owners, and visitors.
Who Was Rüstem Pasha?
Wife of Suleiman the Magnificent, Hurem Sultan (Roxelana), married her daughter Mihrimah Sultan to Rustem Pasha who used to work inner palace as part of staff.
Sultan Suleiman was getting old and when Rüstem Pasha became vizier in 1544, he started to administer the palace together with Hurrem Sultan and Mihrimah. They had a shared goal: to eliminate Şehzade Mustafa. Sultan Suleiman’s first son and crowned prince. (Son of first wife Mahidevran).
Rustem Pasha was given the duty to persuade Sultan Suleiman to believe that his son was plotting against him. Eventually Şehzade Mustafa was executed as a result of this plot. One of the most grievous incident of Ottoman history.
Rüstem Pasha became the most powerful and wealthy bureaucrat of Ottoman Empire after all. His name was involved in corruption and bribery. He left an enormous wealth when he died in 1561.
Architect of Rüstem Pasha Mosque
Rüstem Pasha commissioned the most famous architect of Ottoman Empire, Mimar Sinan, to build his mosque. The mosque was going to be built in one of the busiest area of Istanbul. Therefore Mimar Sinan had a limited space to create a distinctive building. This was a suitable duty for an accomplished architect.
Sinan built one of the most beatiful mosque of Istanbul. The mosque has no distinctive feature from outside at first sight. On the other hand, the interior decoration of the mosque is outstanding. The most elaborate designs of Iznik ceramics adornes the walls and columns of Rüstem Pasha Mosque.
