<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ephesus was one of the most important cities and trade ports of ancient times. The city, which dates back to 1000 BC, is now famous for its well-preserved Roman heritage. In this article, we have provided tips on <strong>where to stay in Ephesus,</strong> one of the most important tourist attractions in Turkey.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most important things to do in Ephesus are the <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/ephesus-artemis-temple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Temple of Artemis</a>, one of the seven wonders of the world, and the Library of Celsus, built in honor of a Roman governor. However, apart from this, there is also a considerable early Christian heritage in Ephesus.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Around the ancient city of Ephesus, there are many important places that are on the pilgrimage route of Christians such as House of Virgin Mary, Basilica of St John and Grotto of Seven Sleepers.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Those who want to see the ruins of Ephesus are looking for accommodation options near the ancient city. In this article you can find information about <strong>best places to stay near Ephesus</strong>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Where to Stay near Ephesus 2025</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock.jpg"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="681" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock.jpg" alt="Best Places to Stay near Ephesus Ruins" class="wp-image-17291" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock-768x511.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the following lines, we answered the question of <strong>where to stay in Ephesus in 2025</strong> under 4 headings. Of course, the closest options to Ephesus ruins will be Selcuk town or Kusadasi where cruise ships dock.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, close to Ephesus, there is also a village like Sirince with a unique view. In addition, the city of Izmir, which stands out with its numerous accommodation options and nightlife, is among the options.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Considering the resort towns of Izmir, the number of options increases. For example, you can choose <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/best-holiday-destinations-in-turkey/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">popular holiday destinations in Turkey</a> such as Foca, Urla, Alacati. I will mention them again in the conclusion part of the article.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Kusadasi</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-031-Ephesus-Kusadasi-Dreamstime.jpg"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="684" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-031-Ephesus-Kusadasi-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="Staying in Kusadasi near Ephesus" class="wp-image-17277" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-031-Ephesus-Kusadasi-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-031-Ephesus-Kusadasi-Dreamstime-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-031-Ephesus-Kusadasi-Dreamstime-768x513.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-031-Ephesus-Kusadasi-Dreamstime-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Kusadasi</strong> is a small tourist town located just a few miles from Ephesus on the Aegean coast. Although it doesn’t quite have the excitement of <em>Marmaris</em> of the natural beauty of, say, <em>Bodrum</em>, it does offer convenient access to Ephesus. Kusadasi is particularly popular with package tour operators and features dozens of hotels which provide everything from dinner to evening entertainment.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The destination is around 50 km from Izmir, so getting to it from the airport is relatively quick and easy. Although not particularly large, Kusadasi still has a range of bars, discos, cafes and pubs to keep you entertained in the evenings. There’s also a large harbour for mooring boats and daily ferries to the nearby Greek island of Samos.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.tripadvisor.com.tr/Hotel_Review-g297972-d633631-Reviews-Charisma_De_Luxe_Hotel-Kusadasi_Turkish_Aegean_Coast.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">The Charisma De Luxe</a> is one of the most popular and best value for money resorts in the town, coming with its own swimming pool and views overlooking the bay. The hotel serves free breakfast and has more than 133 rooms.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Selcuk</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-044-Selcuk-Town-Shutterstock.jpg"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-044-Selcuk-Town-Shutterstock.jpg" alt="Staying in Selcuk Town near Ephesus" class="wp-image-17781" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-044-Selcuk-Town-Shutterstock.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-044-Selcuk-Town-Shutterstock-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-044-Selcuk-Town-Shutterstock-768x512.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-044-Selcuk-Town-Shutterstock-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Selcuk</strong> is the best place to stay to visit Ephesus. Sitting below the castle on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayasuluk_Hill" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Ayasuluk Hill</a>. Selcuk provides a convenient range of amenities for visitors to explore during the evenings. The town also offers excellent transport links to Izmir and local tourist hotspots, providing flexibility and the ability to plan your own schedule.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Aside from the main <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/ephesus-ancient-city-entrance-fee-hours/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ephesus archaeological site</a>, Selcuk is home to many other points of interest, including the Ephesus Museum where you can find out more about the twisting history of the region and why it holds such importance to researchers. There’s also St John’s Basilica, the Citadel (the castle on the hill visible in the picture above) and the Isa Bey Mosque from 14th Century.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Selcuk is home to some high-quality resorts, including the <a href="https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g293976-d295644-Reviews-Hotel_Nilya-Selcuk_Izmir_Province_Turkish_Aegean_Coast.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Nilya Hotel</a>, a small 12-room hotel that surrounds a stunning, interior courtyard with its own fountain. Hotel Bella is close to the Nilya but overlooks the basilica as a bonus.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The important advantage of staying in Selcuk is to be very close to Ephesus Ruins. However, it should be added that it is a little weaker in terms of nightlife and entertainment compared to the other options on our list.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Sirince</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-036-Ephesus-Sirince-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="644" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-036-Ephesus-Sirince-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="Sirince Village in Izmir, Turkey" class="wp-image-17282" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-036-Ephesus-Sirince-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-036-Ephesus-Sirince-Dreamstime-300x189.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-036-Ephesus-Sirince-Dreamstime-768x483.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Sirince</strong> is a small village of around 600 people located near to the ruins of Ephesus. It’s not ideal for people who want easy access to a diverse selection of amenities and attractions during their stay, but it does offer isolation, peace and quiet, and easy access to the ruins.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Settlers built the village in the 15th century, but many of the original buildings are long gone. The original inhabitants of this town left the area during the population exchange between Greece and Turkey after World War I. The modern town comprises mainly 19th-century buildings.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Although Sirince is a small place, it offers a range of resorts and hotels, including the family-run Ephesus Cottages and the <a href="https://www.tripadvisor.com.tr/Hotel_Review-g815366-d312093-Reviews-Nisanyan_Hotel-Sirince_Izmir_Province_Turkish_Aegean_Coast.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Nisanyan Hotel</a> which overlooks the village from a nearby hilltop and features a marble pool. If it’s relaxation that you want (rather than excitement), then Sirince, near to Selcuk, is the destination for you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most important thing Sirince village offers to its visitors is the wide variety of fruit wines. Winemaking in Sirince is a tradition coming from history. Therefore, even though Sirince is a small village, there are wine houses that will give you a good time. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sirince is the best place to stay in Ephesus in 2025 due to its proximity to Ephesus and the unique atmosphere it offers.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. Izmir</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-042-Izmir-City-Shutterstock.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-042-Izmir-City-Shutterstock.jpg" alt="Staying in Izmir City near Ephesus" class="wp-image-17779" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-042-Izmir-City-Shutterstock.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-042-Izmir-City-Shutterstock-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-042-Izmir-City-Shutterstock-768x512.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-042-Izmir-City-Shutterstock-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Izmir</strong> is by far the largest area in the region near Ephesus and the third largest in Turkey, offering practically every service and amenity that you could imagine. What’s more, it also happens to be the location of the nearby airport, helping to make transfers easier. Thanks to its capable transport network, the city provides regular buses, coaches and trains to the Ephesus region, allowing tourists easy access.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It takes around an hour to travel the 50-mile journey from Izmir to the ruins, so if you want to visit Ephesus on a daily basis, then there may be more time-efficient destinations, such as Selcuk and Sirince. Also, if you want quiet, Izmir is not the place to be. It’s a large, sprawling, bustling city of more than 5 million people with heavy traffic around the clock.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As you might imagine, Izmir is home to some stunning hotels. The Piano Hotel located in the heart of the tourist quarter offers great breakfasts and clean rooms. The Wyndham Grand Izmir Ozdilek hotel provides guests with a prime location, and access to things like a minibar and five star amenities. Not only is it close to transport links, but also the nearby military museum.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is a rail transportation system in Izmir called IZBAN. Thanks to the extension of this transportation system to Selcuk, it is now very easy to reach Ephesus from the city. For this reason, Izmir stands out among places to stay close to Ephesus in 2025 with its lively nightlife and delicious restaurant options.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Conclusion</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-043-Eski-Foca-Shutterstock.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-043-Eski-Foca-Shutterstock.jpg" alt="Eski Foca in Izmir, Turkey" class="wp-image-17780" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-043-Eski-Foca-Shutterstock.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-043-Eski-Foca-Shutterstock-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-043-Eski-Foca-Shutterstock-768x512.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/2023-043-Eski-Foca-Shutterstock-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If we want to briefly summarize the question of where to stay in Ephesus. <strong>Selcuk</strong>, which is closest to Ephesus and promises a quiet night, comes first. As <strong>Kusadasi</strong> is a cruise port, it is an eventful place with many tourist facilities.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Sirince</strong> stands out with its natural beauty and wine and is a must-see place. <strong>Izmir</strong>, on the other hand, is one of the most important metropolitan cities of Turkey, therefore it offers many options in every field.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the title above, we talked about the city center of Izmir. However, Izmir also has holiday destinations such as <strong>Foca</strong> (the cozy town in the picture above), <strong>Urla</strong> and <strong>Alacati</strong> (the popular and expensive holiday town of recent years), located in the most beautiful bays of the Aegean.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You will not be disappointed in whichever place you stay. However, it is also important to choose the one that best suits your travel style. If it were me, I would choose Selcuk, which is the closest place to Ephesus. Later, I would enjoy the sea in one of the popular holiday towns.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finally, I would like to recommend a comprehensive article about Ephesus. You may be interested in the <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/ephesus-travel-blog/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">things to do around Ephesus blog post</a>, which introduces both the ruins of Ephesus and other historical artifacts to see around it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As being one of the most important monuments of Ephesus, The <strong>Temple of Artemis</strong> unfortunately could not survive in our time apart from a couple of ruins that it has left behind. However, it is possible to find out how gorgeous once it was by looking those ruins that remained from the temple.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Devoted to Artemis, the goddess of wild nature, the moon and the hunt, this temple was on the list of <a href="https://www.worldhistory.org/The_Seven_Wonders/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">the seven wonders of the ancient world</a>. Temple of Artemis at Ephesus Archaeological Site is located in Western coast of Turkey. If you happen to visit Turkey, you should definitely take a look at this place.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Artemis, The Goddess of the Moon</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-056-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-056-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="A statue depicting the ancient Greek goddess Artemis" class="wp-image-17310" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-056-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-056-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-056-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime-768x512.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-056-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Being the daughter of Leto and Zeus, <strong>Artemis</strong> was twin sister of Apollo. She was renamed as &#8220;Diana&#8221; by Romans. Artemis is born one day before Apollo and she helps her mother while she gives birth to her latter child. After witnessing the pain her mother endures during the delivery, Artemis decides not to marry in her life and for this reason she is identified with virginity and is recognized the guardian of unmarried young girls.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is a dualist relationship between Artemis and Apollo, therefore these two are considered as twins in Ancient Greek sources. While Apollo is identified with the sun, Artemis is portrayed as an anthropomorphic form of the moon. Therefore, <strong>Artemis was also known as the goddess of the moon</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Artemis was worshipped especially in rural and mountainous areas. There were a lot of temples dedicated to Artemis in different areas of Ancient Greek geography. After the cult of Artemis reached to <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/anatolia-map-history-facts-asia-minor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Anatolia</a>, it was reunited with the cult of the &#8220;Mother Goddess&#8221; that had already been there for centuries and they started to identify Artemis with many breasts like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybele" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Cybele</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Greek historian <em>Stefanos Skarmintzos</em> points out the similarity between the cults of Artemis and Cybele. In his article <a href="https://www.academia.edu/37078716/The_cult_of_Artemis_in_Ephesus_and_the_possible_explanation_of_the_bee_symbol" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">The Cult of Artemis in Ephesus and the Possible Explanation of the Bee Symbol</a>, Skarmintzos claims that the cult of Artemis in Anatolia is an assimilated version of the Hititte Goddess Cult with Greek character.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">History of the Temple of Artemis</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Ephesus-Temple-Of-Artemis-in-the-past.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="474" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Ephesus-Temple-Of-Artemis-in-the-past-1024x474.jpg" alt="Temple of Artemis Facts" class="wp-image-5065" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Ephesus-Temple-Of-Artemis-in-the-past-1024x474.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Ephesus-Temple-Of-Artemis-in-the-past-300x139.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Ephesus-Temple-Of-Artemis-in-the-past-768x356.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Ephesus-Temple-Of-Artemis-in-the-past.jpg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The history of the Temple of Artemis</strong> dates back to 6 centuries BC. According to Plynus, a Byzantine historian, the Temple of Artemis was 115-meters-long and 55-meters-wide. Constructed out of marble down to the ground, this temple stood with 127 columns built in Ionic style.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What we know about the masterpieces inside the temple is based upon Plynus’ stories. According to him, inner side of the temple was filled with statues and paintings made by famous artists of that era such as Polyclitus, Pheidias and Cresilas. Also, the columns that supported the temple were decorated with gold and silver.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The construction of the first Temple of Artemis is attributed to the Ionians living in this region. After the first temple was destroyed by flood, the second, and much more magnificent temple, was built by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croesus" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Croesus</a>, King of Lydia. However, it needed rebuilding after it was burnt down by Herostratus in 356.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The temple was uncovered by J.T Wood, an English engineer who worked in the construction of Izmir-Aydin railway, in 1869. Beginning from the excavations that J.T Wood conducted, the results reveal that there are 4 different construction periods of the temple.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since the excavations were carried out on behalf of British Museum, some of the artifacts extracted from this place have still been exhibited in British Museum. Also, Ephesus Museum in Vienna displays some of the pieces that was originally extracted in this place.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">The Burning of the Temple of Artemis</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The burning of the temple of Artemis</strong> was the first act of terrorism that we know, so Herostratus is considered as the first terrorist in history. According to popular wisdom, Herostratus was a fame-seeking young man and set the temple of Artemis on fire to be remembered forever. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, according to different sources, Herostratus was a slave and he set the temple on fire because of his hatred of the people of Ephesus.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The burning of Ephesus has inspired many works of art throughout history. There are references to the burning down of Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the world, in many plays and novels.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Temple of Artemis at Ephesus Facts</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-054-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-054-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="Ruins of the Temple of Artemis in the ancient city of Ephesus" class="wp-image-17308" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-054-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-054-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-054-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime-768x512.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-054-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the most interesting <strong>facts about the Temple of Artemis</strong> is that those who lived in that period described the temple as the greatest architectural work ever. We can see how sacred the temple was regarded in ancient times from the emotional bond Ephesians established with the temple. However, it is known that not only the locals but also all kings (including Alexander the Great) who wanted to conquer Ephesus valued the Temple of Artemis greatly.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There were various temples in Anatolia and Greece dedicated to Artemis. On the other hand, the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus differed from the others in terms of architecture and characteristic features. Artemis is depicted as having many breasts fittingly to the cult of the Mother Goddess and you can see this statue in this day and time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antipater_of_Sidon" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Antipater of Sidon</a> (famous ancient Greek poet), compiling the Seven Wonders of the World, compares the Temple of Artemis to <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Hanging-Gardens-of-Babylon" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Hanging Gardens of Babylon</a> and <a href="https://www.history.com/topics/ancient-history/the-egyptian-pyramids" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Egyptian Pyramids</a> and other important magnificent wonders of the world and he concludes that no other wonder is as magnificent as the Temple of Artemis adding that he had seen them all.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The magnificence of the Temple of Artemis left such an important mark on people&#8217;s memory that its reputation has survived to the present day. Although the temple was destroyed, it was always remembered how it looked. In this way, this famous structure of Anatolia found its place in Renaissance art.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Conclusion</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="681" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock.jpg" alt="Ephesus ruins are located in Izmir, Turkey" class="wp-image-17291" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock-768x511.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In conclusion, the Temple of Artemis is one of the most important works of art in Ancient Age, nevertheless, there are only ruins remained from it in our time. Still, even remaining ruins are enough to understand the magnificence that this temple had once upon a time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are many articles on the <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/category/ephesus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Istanbul Clues site about Ephesus</a>, in which Temple of Artemis is located. <p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Ephesus</strong> is referred to as the best preserved Roman city in the Eastern Mediterranean in many sources. Ephesus, which receives millions of visitors a year, was a very important city in both the Ancient Age and the Middle Ages. It is recommended to hire a <strong>private tour guide in Ephesus</strong> to fully understand the history of this unique place.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ephesus is located in the city of Izmir, on the west coast of Anatolia. Most visitors to Ephesus come from Kusadasi Cruise Port. However, there are also tours to Ephesus from popular holiday destinations such as Istanbul and Bodrum.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is difficult to understand the <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/anatolia-map-history-facts-asia-minor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">history of Anatolia</a> (aka Asia Minor) without seeing Ephesus. Ephesus, which was founded around 1000 BC, was an Ancient Greek city. After Ephesus came under the rule of the Roman Empire, it became the capital of Asian provinces.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus was one of the pilgrimage centers of Antiquity, it remained a holy city for centuries. It was also one of the most important trade ports of the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as a cultural center with important philosophers.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, Ephesus lost its importance when the alluvium that filled the harbor cut off the city’s connection with the sea.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Ephesus Ancient City</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="681" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock.jpg" alt="Ancient Theather at Ephesus " class="wp-image-17291" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock-768x511.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-045-Ephesus-Theater-iStock-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The ancient city of Ephesus</strong> dates back to 1000 BC. The legendary founder of the city, Prince Androcles, found Ephesus with the prophecy of the oracle of the Temple of Apollo. (You may find the foundation legend at the bottom lines)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having a strong cult of mother goddesses, Ephesus was the religious center during the period of polytheistic religions. Initially dedicated to the goddess Cybele, the city later adopted the cult of the goddess Artemis.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ephesus was the most important of the city states called the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ionian_League" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Ionian League</a> during the Ancient Greek period. During the <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/roman-empire-map-history-facts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roman Empire</a> it was the capital of Asia Minor. Therefore, it was a lively trade center and had a population of around 250,000.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ephesus, which was a center of pilgrimage thanks to the Temple of Artemis during polytheistic religions, maintains this feature even today. This is because it has an important place in the history of Christianity. Since Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, lived here for a time, Ephesus is on the Christian pilgrimage route.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is worth noting that Ephesus is the third largest Roman ruin in the world. The three most important monuments in Ephesus are the Temple of Artemis, the Library of Celsus and the Temple of Hadrian.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After talking about Ephesus Ancient City in general, I felt the need to open a separate title for some historical artifacts in Ephesus. In the lines below, we will talk about Artemis Temple and Celsus Library, which were of great importance in history, in a little more detail.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Temple of Artemis</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Ephesus-Temple-Of-Artemis-in-the-past.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="474" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Ephesus-Temple-Of-Artemis-in-the-past-1024x474.jpg" alt="Temple of Artemis at Ephesus" class="wp-image-5065" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Ephesus-Temple-Of-Artemis-in-the-past-1024x474.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Ephesus-Temple-Of-Artemis-in-the-past-300x139.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Ephesus-Temple-Of-Artemis-in-the-past-768x356.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Ephesus-Temple-Of-Artemis-in-the-past.jpg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is only one column left from the <strong>Temple of Artemis</strong>, which was once one of the seven wonders of the world. Carrying out archaeological excavations at the Temple of Artemis, JT Wood said that once there was the statue of Goddess Artemis on this column.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/ephesus-artemis-temple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Temple of Artemis</a>, which was built in the 6th century BC, was a magnificent building rising above 127 columns. The temple, which was damaged by earthquakes and fires, was rebuilt several times. However, with the abandonment of the polytheistic religions after the 4th century, it could not return to its glorious days.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is claimed that the columns of the Temple of Artemis were used in the construction of <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/hagia-sophia-photos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hagia Sophia</a>, although its reality has not been proven precisely. These 8 massive columns supporting the dome of Hagia Sophia are the most remarkable elements of the building.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Library of Celsus</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-035-Ephesus-Celsus-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-035-Ephesus-Celsus-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="Library of Celsus within Ephesus Ancient City" class="wp-image-17281" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-035-Ephesus-Celsus-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-035-Ephesus-Celsus-Dreamstime-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-035-Ephesus-Celsus-Dreamstime-768x512.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-035-Ephesus-Celsus-Dreamstime-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The Library of Celsus</strong>, known as the largest library after the Alexandria and Pergamon libraries during the Roman period, was built in 114 AD in memory of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiberius_Julius_Celsus_Polemaeanus" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Celsus Polemaeanus</a>, a senior bureaucrat in the Roman Empire.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before Celsus was elected as a consul in 92, he was a famous commander in the Roman army. Rising in his political career over time, Celsus became the Asian Governor of the Roman Empire and thus reached the climax of his influence.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tiberius Julius Aquila, Celsus&#8217; son, was determined to immortalize his father&#8217;s name in Asian provinces. Therefore, he started building the Celsus Library, which stands today in all its glory in Ephesus, the Capital of Asian States of the time. When Celsus died in 114, he was buried in the tomb built for him in the western part of the building. The library was completed 3 years after Celsus&#8217; death, in 117 AD.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Archaeological findings show that there were over twelve thousand manuscripts in the Celsus Library. The library, which was used until 262, was badly damaged in the fire that year. The earthquakes in the following years turned the library into a ruin. Despite all these disasters, Library of Celsus is still the most iconic building of Ephesus.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. Ephesus Museum</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-043-Ephesus-Museum-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="642" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-043-Ephesus-Museum-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="Ephesus Museum has Ancient Sculptures" class="wp-image-17289" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-043-Ephesus-Museum-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-043-Ephesus-Museum-Dreamstime-300x188.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-043-Ephesus-Museum-Dreamstime-768x482.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Ephesus Museum</strong>, located in the center of Selcuk province, is a place you can easily find. You can see the famous Statue of Artemis in the museum where the artifacts from Ephesus Ancient City are exhibited. This statue, which was taken from the famous Temple of Artemis I mentioned above, symbolizes abundance and fertility.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Ephesus Archeology Museum also has Gladiator Stels, which you will not see anywhere else. These memorial stones, erected in honor of the gladiators, have reliefs depicting the fighters&#8217; clothing and weapons. Although many who visit the area only see the ruins, this museum is also among the best things to do in Ephesus.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">5. Basilica of St. John</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-041-Ephesus-John-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="671" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-041-Ephesus-John-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="Things to do in Ephesus Blog" class="wp-image-17287" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-041-Ephesus-John-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-041-Ephesus-John-Dreamstime-300x197.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-041-Ephesus-John-Dreamstime-768x503.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Basilica of St. John</strong> is a church built in late antiquity near Ephesus. Saint John, one of the disciples of Jesus, came to Western Anatolia with Virgin Mary when Jesus died in 30s. It was thought that Saint John was buried around Ephesus after he died.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/byzantine-empire-map-information-facts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Byzantine Empire</a>, the famous emperor Justinian decided to build a church where Saint John&#8217;s tomb was located. <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/emperor-justinian-facts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Justinian</a>, who also built structures such as <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/hagia-irene-museum-church-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hagia Irene</a> and Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, is known as the most remarkable emperor in Byzantine history.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While Justinian built the Basilica of St. John, he took an example of a famous church in Istanbul. He built the new church similar to the <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/church-of-the-holy-apostles-istanbul/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Church of the Holy Apostles</a>, which was the first monumental church in <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/byzantine-constantinople/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Constantinople</a>. This church was built by <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/emperor-constantine-facts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Constantine the Great</a> after Constantinople was declared the Roman capital.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">St. John&#8217;s Basilica was built between 548 and 565. Only ruins have survived from the church, which is located 3.5 kilometers from Ephesus Ancient City. Those traveling to Ephesus should definitely add this church to their must-see list.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">6. The House of Virgin Mary</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-032-Ephesus-Mary-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-032-Ephesus-Mary-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="House of Virgin Mary in Ephesus" class="wp-image-17278" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-032-Ephesus-Mary-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-032-Ephesus-Mary-Dreamstime-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-032-Ephesus-Mary-Dreamstime-768x512.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-032-Ephesus-Mary-Dreamstime-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The House of Virgin Mary</strong> has an interesting history. According to traditional Christian history, after Jesus was crucified, his mother emigrated to Ephesus and died there. However, it was not known exactly where Virgin Mary lived until the 19th century.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A German nun named <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Catherine_Emmerich" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Anne Catherine Emmerich</a>, who lived between 1774 and 1824, saw some religious delusions and turned them into a book. Based on the book that the nun wrote about what she saw, the researchers found a chapel in Ephesus in 1881.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The building, presumably to be the chapel of a Byzantine monastery located here in the 6th century, was associated with Mary. It remains a mystery how Catherine Emmerich, who had never been to Ephesus in her life, knew the location of a chapel that could be found as a result of long archaeological excavations.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The House of Virgin Mary is filled with curious tourists today. It is considered as one of the stops on the Christian Pilgrimage Road, which started in Europe and continued until Jerusalem. Visiting the house of the Virgin Mary is among the best things to do in Ephesus in 2024.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">7. Ayasuluk Fortress</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-040-Ephesus-Ayasuluk-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-040-Ephesus-Ayasuluk-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="Ayasuluk Fortress is a must during Ephesus Travel" class="wp-image-17286" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-040-Ephesus-Ayasuluk-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-040-Ephesus-Ayasuluk-Dreamstime-300x169.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-040-Ephesus-Ayasuluk-Dreamstime-768x432.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Ayasuluk Fortress</strong> is located on the highest hill of Selcuk Province. During the archaeological excavations in the region, remains dating back to the Neolithic Age were found.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first castle here was built in the Byzantine period. However, it changed hands after the <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/seljuk-turks-empire-map/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Seljuk Empire</a> entered Anatolia aftermath of <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/battle-of-manzikert/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Battle of Manzikert</a>. The fortress, which was strengthened during the Seljuk period, had 15 watch towers, living spaces and mosques. However, many of these historical buildings are in ruins today.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you go to the castle, which has a bird&#8217;s eye view, you can take beautiful photos. However, as archaeological excavations continue, some parts of the castle are sometimes closed to visitors.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">8. Isa Bey Mosque</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-037-Ephesus-Isa-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-037-Ephesus-Isa-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="Isa Bey Mosque from Seljuk Turks" class="wp-image-17283" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-037-Ephesus-Isa-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-037-Ephesus-Isa-Dreamstime-300x169.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-037-Ephesus-Isa-Dreamstime-768x432.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Isa Bey Mosque</strong>, built during the Seljuk period, is one of the most beautiful works of 14th century architecture. Surrounded by high walls, the courtyard reflects a great stonework. There are reused columns in the courtyard and in some parts of the building that had been taken from an old Roman bath.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The name of the architect who designed the building was noted in the mosque inscription, which reflects the beauty of <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/turkish-calligraphy-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Turkish calligraphy</a>. Isa Bey Mosque, one of the oldest examples of Turkish mosques in <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/anatolia-map-history-facts-asia-minor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Anatolia</a>, is definitely a place to be seen.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">9. Byzantine Aqueduct</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-042-Ephesus-Aqueduct-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-042-Ephesus-Aqueduct-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="Roman Aqueduct in Selcuk Town" class="wp-image-17288" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-042-Ephesus-Aqueduct-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-042-Ephesus-Aqueduct-Dreamstime-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-042-Ephesus-Aqueduct-Dreamstime-768x512.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-042-Ephesus-Aqueduct-Dreamstime-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <strong>Byzantine Aqueduct</strong>, which passes through the Selcuk district, attracts the attention of tourists as a place where storks nest on it. You may want to photograph the historical aqueduct located very close to the Isa Bey Mosque and St. John&#8217;s Basilica, which we mentioned in the upper lines.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are many places to see about Roman history in Turkey. If you are interested in the magnificent water systems built by Rome, you should definitely see the Valens Aqueduct in Istanbul.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">10. Grotto of the Seven Sleepers</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-048-Ephesus-Sleepers-Shutterstock.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-048-Ephesus-Sleepers-Shutterstock.jpg" alt="Grotto of Seven Sleepers in Turkey" class="wp-image-17294" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-048-Ephesus-Sleepers-Shutterstock.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-048-Ephesus-Sleepers-Shutterstock-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-048-Ephesus-Sleepers-Shutterstock-768x512.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-048-Ephesus-Sleepers-Shutterstock-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Grotto of the Seven Sleepers</strong> is one of the most interesting places to visit in Ephesus. In order to properly understand the legendary events that took place here, it is recommended to take a <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/ephesus-private-tour-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">guided tour on your Ephesus trip</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many Roman emperors in history had implemented a policy of persecution of Christians. Christians fleeing from the Roman soldiers took refuge in rural geographies such as Cappadocia. The underground cities, valleys and rock churches you will see in <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/cappadocia-travel-blog/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Cappadocia</a> today are proof of how Christians resisted these conditions in those days.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There was a similar situation in Ephesus. Legend has it that in 250 AD, the Roman emperor <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decius" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Decius</a> punished seven faithful Christians by imprisoning them in a cave. Christians who fall asleep in the cave wake up like a normal person after 200 years. Christianity was then free on the territory of the Roman Empire.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They live the rest of their life in the city of Ephesus in peace. When they die, they were buried in the same cave. Therefore, the cave, which has Seven Sleepers, is on the pilgrimage route of Christians. The Grotto of Seven Sleepers is located about two kilometers from the ancient city of Ephesus.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">11. Sirince Village</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-036-Ephesus-Sirince-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="644" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-036-Ephesus-Sirince-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="Places to Visit nearby Ephesus when Travel" class="wp-image-17282" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-036-Ephesus-Sirince-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-036-Ephesus-Sirince-Dreamstime-300x189.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-036-Ephesus-Sirince-Dreamstime-768x483.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Sirince Village</strong> is one of the most beautiful places to visit near Ephesus and Kusadasi. It has a warm atmosphere with its red-roofed houses and cobblestone streets. Before the Turkish-Greek population exchange after the First World War, mainly Greeks lived here. After the exchange, Turks from Greece settled here.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The fact that Sirince is on a high hill surrounded by trees gives it a distinctive beauty. In this small town, famous for its fruit wines, you can taste delicious wines and eat good food. One of the oldest historical monuments in the town is a church dedicated to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_the_Baptist" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">John the Baptist</a>. It contains frescoes dating from the Byzantine period.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Pamucak Beach</strong> is located 8 km from Selcuk city center and 6 km from Ephesus Archaeological Site. Pamucak, which is a wonderful beach with a length of 11 km, is also known as Ephesus Beach. The width of the golden sandy beach is about 80 meters. Kucuk Menderes River meets the sea from the middle of the coast in Pamucak.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pamucak Beach is highly preferred for its blue flag clean sea and sandy structure, as well as being suitable for water sports and camping. In addition to many touristic facilities, Pamucak has a picnic area in the forest, a camping space and five-star hotels.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">The Foundation Legend of Ephesus</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the Ephesus Travel Blog post, we talked about things to do in Ephesus so far. However, one of the most important things that makes Ephesus interesting is <strong>the foundation legend of Ephesus</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to the legends, Ephesus and Istanbul were founded in similar ways as both cities began with the mysterious prophecies of an oracle in Delphi, Greece. Legend has it that, Androcles, the son of the King Codrus, sought the advice of the oracle of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_of_Apollo_(Delphi)" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Temple of Apollo</a> after his Father died.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He wanted to leave Athens and make a new start, but he didn’t know where to go. The oracle advised Androcles to go to the East, cross the Aegean Sea and land there; he said: “The fish will give you a signal, and the pig will guide you.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, Androcles crossed the Aegean Sea and anchored his ship at the bay where Kucuk Menderes River meets the sea. He and his men started fishing, and one of the fish jumped to the floor. Then, a pig came out of the bushes and stole the fish and ran away. Androcles chased the pig up a hill and then hit the pig with his arrow.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The fish gave the signal, and the pig guided them, and Androcles founded his new city where he killed the pig. This city, which Androclos founded in 1000 BC, would be one of the most important cities of ancient times.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Conclusion</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ephesus is not the kind of place that can be reduced to opening hours, ticket prices, or a quick checklist of highlights. It is one of the most layered archaeological landscapes in the Mediterranean — a city shaped over centuries by myth, power, religion, and geography.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For readers familiar with <em>Istanbul Clues</em>, this approach will feel familiar. Just as Istanbul cannot be understood without tracing its Byzantine, Roman, and Ottoman layers, Ephesus cannot be meaningfully visited without understanding <strong>how and why this city mattered</strong> — and for how long.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is why this guide begins with a <strong>deliberately in-depth historical overview</strong>. As a licensed tour guide who has spent over two decades explaining the long arc of history in Istanbul, I find it impossible to approach Ephesus without giving space to its past. This is not academic indulgence; it is a historian’s reflex — and a guide’s responsibility.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That said, this is still a practical CLUES guide.<br>If you are primarily looking for <strong>entrance fees, opening hours, or visiting logistics for 2026</strong>, you can easily jump ahead using the <strong>Table of Contents</strong>. A detailed <strong>Quick Guide</strong> at the top of the page already covers the essential planning information.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For those who choose to stay with the story, what follows is the historical backbone that makes Ephesus far more than a beautiful ruin.</p>

  <ul style="margin:0; padding-left:18px; font-size:14px; line-height:1.6;">
    <li>🎟️ <strong>Entrance fee:</strong> <strong>€40</strong> (2026). <strong>Museum Pass Türkiye is valid</strong>.</li>

    <li>⏰ <strong>Opening hours:</strong> typically <strong>08:00–18:00</strong>. Ticket offices close at <strong>17:30</strong>. Open daily.</li>

    <li>🌙 <strong>Night visits (seasonal):</strong> possible on <strong>selected evenings</strong> between <strong>May–October</strong> as part of the <strong>Night Museology</strong> program (not every day).</li>

    <li>⏳ <strong>Realistic visit time:</strong> allow at least <strong>2–3 hours</strong> inside the site. Ephesus is large and involves long walking distances.</li>

    <li>🚶 <strong>Walking &amp; terrain:</strong> mostly <strong>uneven marble streets</strong>. Good walking shoes and water are essential, especially in summer.</li>

    <li>🔥 <strong>Heat reality check:</strong> limited shade inside the ruins. Midday visits in summer can be physically demanding.</li>

    <li>🏛️ <strong>Don’t skip:</strong> <strong>Library of Celsus</strong>, <strong>Great Theatre</strong>, <strong>Curetes Street</strong>, and the <strong>Terrace House area</strong> (extra ticket).</li>

    <li>📍 <strong>Location:</strong> near <strong>Selçuk</strong>, İzmir Province. Most visitors arrive via <strong>Selçuk</strong> or <strong>Kuşadası</strong>.</li>

    <li>🧭 <strong>Planning tip:</strong> this guide begins with an <strong>extended historical overview</strong>. Use the <strong>Table of Contents</strong> to jump directly to tickets, hours, and logistics if needed.</li>

  <span style="font-weight:600;">Insider’s Note:</span>
  Ephesus is an <strong>open-air archaeological site</strong> with <strong>very limited shade</strong>, and during summer months temperatures rise quickly; to avoid both <strong>intense heat</strong> and <strong>cruise-ship crowds</strong>, the best strategy is to <strong>arrive early in the morning</strong>, ideally right after opening. Many visitors reach Ephesus on <strong>day trips from Kuşadası</strong>, especially via cruise excursions, and if you prefer a more structured and time-efficient visit, you can review <strong>half-day and private tour options</strong> in the blue box below.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">The History of Ephesus Ancient City</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The history of Ephesus stretches back to around <strong>1000 BC</strong>, and in an intriguing way, its foundation story <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/istanbul-history-facts/" type="post" id="14747">echoes that of Istanbul</a>. Both cities trace their origins to <strong>oracular prophecies</strong> delivered by the Temple of Apollo at Delphi — reminders that myth and geography were deeply intertwined in the ancient world.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to legend, <strong>Androcles</strong>, the son of King Codrus of Athens, sought guidance from the oracle after his father’s death. Unsure where to establish a new city, he was told to travel east, cross the Aegean Sea, and follow a cryptic sign:</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>“The fish will give you a signal, and the pig will guide you.”</em></p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Only after landing near the mouth of the <strong>Küçük Menderes River</strong> did the meaning become clear. While cooking fish by the shore, one fish leapt from the fire, startling a wild boar hidden in the bushes. The animal seized the fish and fled uphill. Androcles followed, killed the boar, and founded his city on that spot — fulfilling the prophecy exactly as foretold.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This blend of myth, geography, and fate sets the tone for Ephesus’ long and complex story.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Below, the city’s history is presented under twelve chronological themes. Since visualizing ancient time periods is never easy, the narrative focuses on <strong>turning points</strong> — moments when Ephesus changed direction and redefined its role in the ancient world.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">1. The Ionian League</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-055-Ephesus-Diadochi-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-055-Ephesus-Diadochi-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="This picture is a visual that symbolizes the founding of Ephesus by the Ancient Greeks in 1000 BC." class="wp-image-17309" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-055-Ephesus-Diadochi-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-055-Ephesus-Diadochi-Dreamstime-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-055-Ephesus-Diadochi-Dreamstime-768x512.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-055-Ephesus-Diadochi-Dreamstime-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ephesus was initially founded on a defensible hill, strategically positioned to protect it from both land and sea attacks. This early choice allowed the city to grow rapidly and accumulate wealth without constant threat of invasion.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In time, Ephesus became a prominent member of the <strong>Ionian League</strong>, a confederation of twelve city-states along the Aegean coast. During this period, the city flourished not only economically but intellectually, emerging as an important center of philosophy and early scientific thought.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">2. The Cult of Artemis</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Long before Artemis became a Greek goddess, Anatolia worshipped <strong>Cybele</strong>, the powerful <a href="https://web.sas.upenn.edu/discentes/2020/08/28/blood-lead-and-tears-the-cult-of-cybele-as-a-means-of-addressing-ancient-roman-issues-of-fertility/" type="link" id="https://web.sas.upenn.edu/discentes/2020/08/28/blood-lead-and-tears-the-cult-of-cybele-as-a-means-of-addressing-ancient-roman-issues-of-fertility/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mother Goddess of fertility</a>. As Ionian culture blended with local traditions, Cybele gradually transformed into <strong>Artemis of Ephesus</strong>, a uniquely Anatolian version of the goddess.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The rise of her cult elevated Ephesus into a major religious center. By the 8th century BC, pilgrims were traveling from across the region to worship at her sanctuary, cementing the city’s spiritual importance in Western Anatolia.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">3. The King of Lydia, Croesus</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Around <strong>800 BC</strong>, Ephesus attracted the attention of <strong>King Croesus of Lydia</strong>, famed for his immense wealth. Confident in the protection of Artemis, the Ephesians had never constructed defensive walls, believing divine power alone would safeguard the city.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This faith proved costly. Croesus captured Ephesus with ease. Many inhabitants were relocated closer to the Temple of Artemis, and <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Croesus" type="link" id="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Croesus" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the city fell under Lydian rule</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yet Croesus showed remarkable reverence for Artemis. From his legendary riches, he financed major enhancements to the temple, reinforcing Ephesus’ religious prestige even under foreign domination.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">4. The Persian Invasion</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Beginning in <strong>550 BC</strong>, Persian forces swept across <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/anatolia-map-history-facts-asia-minor/" type="post" id="4664">Anatolia</a>, conquering the Ionian cities along the Aegean coast. Many were destroyed or heavily damaged.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ephesus, however, survived through diplomacy. Its strategic value as a prosperous port city allowed its leaders to negotiate favorable terms, agreeing to pay substantial taxes in exchange for protection. As a result, Ephesus escaped the devastation suffered by its neighbors.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">5. The Destruction of the Temple</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-054-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-054-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="Although the Temple of Artemis is the jewel of Ephesus, only a few columns remain from the ancient structure today, and these columns can be seen in the picture." class="wp-image-17308" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-054-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-054-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-054-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime-768x512.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-054-Ephesus-Artemis-Dreamstime-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Disaster struck when <strong>Herostratus</strong>, an Ephesian seeking immortality through infamy, set fire to the <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/ephesus-artemis-temple/" type="post" id="88">Temple of Artemis</a>. The act devastated the city, both spiritually and politically.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For centuries, Ephesus had been defined by its temple. Its destruction threatened the city’s identity and status. Determined to restore their standing, the Ephesians rebuilt the sanctuary on an even grander scale, reaffirming their devotion and resilience.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">6. Alexander the Great</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the new temple rose, <strong>Alexander the Great</strong> entered Anatolia during his campaign against Persia. Captivated by Ephesus and the sanctuary of Artemis, he offered to finance the temple’s completion — on the condition that it be dedicated to him.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Ephesians declined with diplomatic finesse, noting that a god should not dedicate a temple to a mortal. The temple was completed nonetheless and later earned its place among the <strong>Seven Wonders of the Ancient World</strong>, becoming one of the most celebrated structures of the Hellenistic era.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">7. The Diadochi Period</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-052-Ephesus-Alexander-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="801" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-052-Ephesus-Alexander-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="After Alexander the Great, his generals (Diadochi) divided the empire among themselves and this picture depicts the somewhat chaotic situation at that time." class="wp-image-17306" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-052-Ephesus-Alexander-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-052-Ephesus-Alexander-Dreamstime-300x235.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-052-Ephesus-Alexander-Dreamstime-768x601.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After Alexander’s untimely death, his empire fractured among his generals — the <strong>Diadochi</strong>. Ephesus came under the rule of <strong>Lysimachus</strong>, a pragmatic and capable ruler.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recognizing that sediment was slowly silting up the harbor, Lysimachus made a radical decision: the city had to move. When the population resisted, he forced the issue by blocking the city’s drainage system. Faced with disease and unsanitary conditions, the Ephesians relocated.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For the first time, Ephesus was surrounded by strong defensive walls — a city finally fortified against both nature and invasion.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">8. Roman Empire Period</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under Roman rule, particularly during the <strong>Pax Romana</strong> of Augustus, Ephesus entered its golden age. Prosperity, stability, and imperial favor transformed it into one of the most important cities of the Eastern Mediterranean.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most of the monumental structures visible today — streets, baths, temples, and theaters — date from this Roman period, which defines Ephesus’ archaeological identity.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">9. The Library of Celsus</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-035-Ephesus-Celsus-Dreamstime.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-035-Ephesus-Celsus-Dreamstime.jpg" alt="Built during the Roman period, the Library of Celsus is today one of Turkey's most popular museums and is visited by large tour groups (especially those arriving from the Kusadasi cruise port) every summer." class="wp-image-17281" srcset="https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-035-Ephesus-Celsus-Dreamstime.jpg 1024w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-035-Ephesus-Celsus-Dreamstime-300x200.jpg 300w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-035-Ephesus-Celsus-Dreamstime-768x512.jpg 768w, https://istanbulclues.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/2022-035-Ephesus-Celsus-Dreamstime-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the 2nd century AD, Ephesus served as the capital of Rome’s eastern provinces. <strong>Celsus Polemaeanus</strong>, a distinguished Roman official, governed the city during this era.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To honor him, his son <strong>Tiberius Julius Aquila</strong> commissioned the <strong>Library of Celsus</strong>. Though only the façade survives, it remains one of the most iconic images of the ancient world — a symbol of knowledge, prestige, and Roman urban culture.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">10. Ephesus and Early Christianity</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ephesus also occupies a significant place in <strong>early Christian history</strong>. Tradition holds that <strong>Saint John</strong> and <strong>the Virgin Mary</strong> lived in the region, embedding the city into Christian memory.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the 19th century, archaeological efforts inspired by the visions of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Catherine_Emmerich" type="link" id="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Catherine_Emmerich" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Anne Catherine Emmerich</a> led to the identification of the <strong>House of the Virgin Mary</strong>, solidifying Ephesus’ role as a Christian pilgrimage destination.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">11. The Port of Ephesus</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For centuries, sediment gradually filled the harbor, despite repeated attempts by Roman emperors — including <strong>Hadrian</strong> — to clear it. Eventually, the sea retreated permanently.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Though Ephesus remained culturally active during Byzantine and early Ottoman times, the loss of its port sealed its decline. By the 16th century, the city had largely faded from prominence.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">12. Ephesus in Modern Times</h3>

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Modern archaeology revived Ephesus’ legacy. In the 19th century, <a href="https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/term/BIOG148762" type="link" id="https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/term/BIOG148762" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">John Turtle Wood</a> uncovered the Temple of Artemis, reigniting global interest in the site.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, excavations continue under the direction of the <strong>Austrian Archaeological Institute</strong>, while artifacts recovered from the city are displayed in the <strong>Ephesus Museum in Selçuk</strong> — completing the story from myth to modern scholarship.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Ephesus Entrance Fee 2026</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The entrance fee for <strong>Ephesus Ancient City</strong> is <strong>€40 as of 2026</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <strong>Museum Pass Türkiye</strong> is valid for entry, making Ephesus one of the major archaeological sites covered by the national museum card. This is particularly useful for travelers planning to visit multiple state-run museums and archaeological sites during their trip.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To complete your visit, consider stopping by the <strong>Ephesus Archaeological Museum</strong> in Selçuk. While the ruins present the city in its original setting, the museum provides essential context through statues, reliefs, and everyday objects uncovered during excavations.<br>The entrance fee for the Ephesus Museum is <strong>€10 in 2026</strong>, and it is located only a short distance from the ancient site.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Ticket prices last confirmed: February 2026.</em></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Ephesus Opening Hours 2026</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2026, <strong>Ephesus Ancient City is open every day of the year</strong>.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Opening hours:</strong> 08:00 – 18:00</li>

<li><strong>Last ticket sale:</strong> 17:30</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These hours apply under normal operating conditions and cover the standard daytime visit.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Night Visits (Seasonal)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the high season — typically <strong>from May to October</strong> — Ephesus may participate in Turkey’s <strong>“Night Museology”</strong> program. On selected days of the week, the site can remain open until <strong>late evening hours (approximately 19:00–23:30)</strong>, offering a very different atmosphere from daytime visits.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This program does <strong>not</strong> run daily and schedules may change from week to week. Evening openings are announced officially and depend on staffing, lighting, and event planning.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Important Note</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Opening hours can occasionally change due to:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>special events,</li>

<li>conservation or restoration work,</li>

<li>or operational adjustments.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For this reason, it is always advisable to <a href="https://muze.gov.tr/muze-detay?DistId=EFS&amp;SectionId=EFS01" type="link" id="https://muze.gov.tr/muze-detay?DistId=EFS&amp;SectionId=EFS01" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">check the official website</a> shortly before your visit to reconfirm <strong>both entrance fees and visiting hours</strong>, especially if you are planning around a tight schedule or evening access.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Opening hours last confirmed: February 2026.</em></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">How to Get to Ephesus? (2026 Transport Guide)</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ephesus is located near the town of Selçuk, in the İzmir region of western Turkey. Since Selçuk does not have its own airport, most visitors arrive via <a href="https://izmirairport.com/" type="link" id="https://izmirairport.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport</a> or travel from nearby resort towns such as Kuşadası.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Below are the most practical and commonly used ways to reach Ephesus in 2026.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">From Izmir (City Center or Airport)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most reliable and budget-friendly option from Izmir is the <strong>İZBAN suburban train system</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From Izmir city center or directly from the airport station, take the <strong>southbound İZBAN line</strong> toward <strong>Tepeköy</strong>. At Tepeköy, transfer to the connecting train going to <strong>Selçuk</strong>. These connections are scheduled to align, so the transfer is usually straightforward.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The total journey time is approximately <strong>1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes</strong>, depending on your starting point in Izmir.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alternatively, long-distance buses and regional coaches depart regularly from <strong>Izmir Otogar (Main Bus Terminal)</strong> to Selçuk. Travel time by bus is similar, though trains are generally more predictable.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">From Kuşadası</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are staying in Kuşadası or arriving by cruise ship, Ephesus is very close — roughly <strong>20 km (12 miles)</strong> inland.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The easiest option is a <strong>minibus (dolmuş)</strong>. Minibuses labeled <strong>“Selçuk – Efes”</strong> depart frequently from the Kuşadası bus station and central stops, usually every 20–30 minutes. They drop passengers near the <strong>Lower Gate</strong> of the archaeological site.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Taxis are also widely available. A taxi ride from Kuşadası port or town center to Ephesus typically takes <strong>20–25 minutes</strong> and is the most comfortable option, especially in hot weather.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">From Selçuk Town Center</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ephesus is only <strong>3 km (2 miles)</strong> from Selçuk town center.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can walk along <strong>Dr. Sabri Yayla Boulevard</strong>, a flat and scenic route that takes about <strong>30–40 minutes</strong>. However, during summer months, walking is not recommended due to heat and lack of shade.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A more practical option is the <strong>local minibus</strong>, which runs frequently from Selçuk bus station to the ancient city entrance for a small fee.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">By Car</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are driving, Ephesus is well signposted from Selçuk and Kuşadası. There are <strong>paid parking areas</strong> at both entrances:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Upper Gate (Magnesia Gate)</strong></li>

<li><strong>Lower Gate (near the ancient harbor area)</strong></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most visitors enter from one gate and exit from the other, which works well if you are using a taxi or private transfer.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Conclusion</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ephesus is not only one of the most impressive Greco-Roman archaeological sites in the world, but also the cultural heart of a much wider historical landscape centered around <strong>Selçuk</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Beyond the marble streets of the ancient city, visitors can explore:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>the <strong>House of the Virgin Mary</strong>,</li>

<li><strong>St. John’s Basilica</strong>,</li>

<li>and the <strong>Temple of Artemis</strong>, once counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Together, these sites form a rare intersection of <strong>classical antiquity, early Christianity, and Anatolian history</strong> — a combination that makes the region far richer than a single archaeological stop.</p>
