Cappadocia is a unique geography that has been formed over thousands of years. The Cappadocia region, where many civilizations have lived, has a heritage from the Roman and Byzantine periods. It is recommended that you hire a private tour guide in Cappadocia to trace this ancient history.

The Persians called Cappadocia “The land of beautiful horses”. This beautiful name has survived to the present day and describes the untouched and unique geography of Cappadocia very well.

One of the three must-see destinations in Turkey, Cappadocia, promises a fabulous experience. Tourists visiting Istanbul can learn a lot about the history of ancient Anatolia (Asia Minor) if they also visit Cappadocia and Ephesus.

Private Tour Guide in Cappadocia 2025

The known history of Cappadocia goes back to the Hittites period. Cappadocia, which gained importance in the Roman period, is a very significant place in the history of early Christianity.

The first Christians lived in Cappadocia to escape the persecution inflicted on them by the Roman Empire. The rock churches and underground cities left by them can still be seen.

It is necessary to hire a private tour guide in Cappadocia to discover this historical heritage properly. A knowledgeable and experienced tour guide can bring the historical artifacts of these ancient lands alive to your eyes with the stories he tells.

In this article, we have listed top 5 places to visit in Cappadocia. You can find information about the most important things to do in Cappadocia in the following lines.

1. Goreme Open Air Museum

Goreme Open Air Museum promises its visitors a magnificent journey in history. The rock churches in Goreme Open Air Museum also contain examples of the first monasteries in the world.

These monasteries, which had a self-sufficient system, made a revolution in Christian history. The people of the monastery survived by growing agricultural products and were not dependent on the outside world.

These monasteries, which existed during Late Antiquity and Middle Ages, lived their most popular times during the Byzantine Empire.

It is recommended that you book a private tour guide in Cappadocia to fully understand the history of the monasteries carved into the rocks in Goreme.

2. Devrent Valley

Devrent Valley is also known as the imagination valley. There are fairy chimneys with interesting shapes here and these can be compared to many things with the help of your imagination. For example, one of the fairy chimneys looks like a camel, while the other looks like a praying nun with open arms.

Devrent Valley is also neighbor to Monks Valley, one of the most famous valleys of Cappadocia. Monks (aka Pasabag) Valley, one of the centers of monastic life in Cappadocia in history, is among the must-see places in this area.

3. Avanos

Avanos is one of the oldest pottery centers in the world. Pottery made by collecting clays on the bed of the Red River is a work of art. This ancient art, dating back thousands of years, still continues.

One of the first things that comes to mind about Cappadocia is pottery. On a private guided tour of Cappadocia, you can go to one of the local shops promoting the art of pottery and learn the intricacies of this art.

Pottery workshops in Cappadocia show you how to make pottery first and then let you try it yourself. Thus, you will appreciate how difficult this art, which seems quite easy at first, is.

4. Ihlara Valley

Ihlara Valley is the most special of all valleys in Cappadocia. The canyon, which has a length of 14 kilometers, is a magnificent natural wonder. In Ihlara Valley, it is possible to observe nature and to see the traces of those who lived here in the past.

There are dozens of rock churches in Ihlara Valley. One of the most popular settlements of early Christianity, Ihlara became a shelter for those who escaped from Roman soldiers.

There are many frescoes preserved in the Ihlara Churches until today. These frescoes make sense with the masterful storytelling of tour guides.

5. Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Tour

Participating in the hot air balloon tour is one of the most important things to do in Cappadocia. If you want to watch the unique geography of Cappadocia and take Instagram photos, the Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Tour is for you.

After traveling with a private tour guide in Cappadocia and learning everywhere, you can crown your Cappadocia trip with a balloon tour.

Balloon tours are held throughout the year and offer different views every season. In this way, you can see the awakening of nature in Cappadocia in spring, and the legendary view of the fairy chimneys covered with snow in winter.

The travel agency you receive guided tour service can arrange a place for you on the balloon flight. It should also be noted that it is difficult to find a place in balloon tours due to the high demand.

Conclusion

If you are going to visit Turkey, it is recommended that you make a weekly plan. During this time, you can see Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and, if time remains, Pamukkale.

You can find some useful articles about Cappadocia on this site.
The Dark Church is the most important historical monument in Cappadocia that has survived from the Byzantine period. Compared to other historical buildings in Cappadocia, this church in Goreme has the best preserved Byzantine frescoes.

This church, where the frescoes still preserve their vivid colors, is known as the “Karanlik Kilise” in the local language. In this article, you can find information about the entrance fee and visiting hours of Dark Church, the jewel of Goreme Open Air Museum.

History of the Dark Church in Goreme

The history of Dark Church goes back a thousand years, that is, to the Medieval Byzantine period. Dark Church, one of the most important tourist attractions of Cappadocia, offers us information about the medieval monastic life.

The Church receives a very low amount of light from the small window in the Narthex and the name of the church comes from here. Since the sunlight was low, the frescoes remained largely alive. In fact, according to experts, the Dark Church has the best preserved frescoes in Cappadocia.

Built in the 11th century, the Dark Church is in UNESCO World Heritage List alongside with Goreme National Park. The church is located in the Goreme Valley of Cappadocia, which was one of the most popular areas of those who wanted to retreat during the Byzantine period.

Cappadocia, a home to Christian monks for centuries, changed identity after the fall of Byzantium. Cappadocia, where the monasteries were abandoned, became a living space of the people thanks to its favorable geography. Recent sources say that the church was used as a pigeon’s nest until the 1950s.

Some experts attribute the long-term preservation of the frescoes in the church to pigeon manure. The fact that the magnificent frescoes of the church have survived to our day is pleasing for art and history lovers. Many events in the Bible are depicted on the walls and ceiling of the church.

One of the large domes of the church is dedicated to the fresco of Christ Pantocrator. The depiction of Christ Pantocrator (Ruler of All) was one of the most prominent religious motifs of the Byzantine period. Two other images of Christ Pantocrator from Byzantium are found in the Hagia Sophia and Chora (now Kariye) mosques in Istanbul.

The important events in the Bible are told through the Byzantine art on the walls of the Dark Church. The most important of these scenes are Annunciation, Baptism of Jesus, Raising of Lazarus, Metamorphosis, Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, Betrayal, Crucifixion of Jesus, Harrowing of Hell, The Three Marys, The commissioning of the Twelve Apostles and Ascension scenes.

When you see such beautiful works of art, I can imagine that you will want to view them immediately. However, do not forget to turn off your flash before taking pictures, as the frescoes are sensitive to light.

Best Frescoes in the Dark Church

Located in Goreme, the most visited tourist destination in Cappadocia, Dark Church hosts magnificent frescoes. These works of art from the Byzantine Empire give us clues about the Christian art of that period.

You can find a selection of the best frescoes in the Dark Church, known as the Karanlik Kilise, in the lines below. Of course, each mosaic is valuable, and choosing the best is a subjective decision. But I tried to introduce the best preserved ones.

1. Christ Pantocrator

It is possible to come across Christ Pantocrator, an important description of Christian iconography in many churches in Europe. Christ Pantocrator, the oldest known religious icon, is depicted as Jesus making a sign of consecration with his right hand while holding the holy book in his left hand.

The word Pantokrator means “the master of the universe”. This depiction adorns the large dome of the Dark Church and is identified with the church.

2. Deesis

Deesis, like Christ Pantokrator, is an icon in which Jesus is in the center. Jesus, who stands in the middle of the icon, carries a book with him, next to the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist. In this mosaic depicting the Last Judgment, Mary and John ask God for mercy on behalf of sinful people.

There are many things to do in Cappadocia, one of the most unique places in the world. Among them, it is quite interesting to fly with a hot air balloon, trekking in the valleys and visit the churches carved into the rocks. However, if there is anything more interesting in Cappadocia than these activities, it is to visit ancient underground cities. Kaymakli Underground City stands out among the hidden treasures of Cappadocia.

The living spaces created by people under their houses to protect them from wars have evolved into cities over the centuries. Those living in the rooms connected to each other through tunnels needed common things. Therefore, wine cellars, churches and meeting rooms were built in underground cities. Even the ventilation system has been added to ensure long-term accommodation.

In this article, I will introduce you to Kaymakli Underground City, one of the two most visited underground cities in Cappadocia. If you’re curious about the other one, you can find details about it in the Derinkuyu Underground City article.

History of Kaymakli Underground City

Even though the history of Kaymakli Underground City goes back to antiquity, the current heritage is from the early Christian period. Therefore, it is useful to briefly mention the importance of Cappadocia in early Christianity.

Jesus’ death dates back to the time of Augustus, the first emperor of Rome. After this date, Christianity was spread by the disciples of Jesus to the most important cities of the world. Some of these cities were Alexandria, Antioch, Ephesus and Rome. However, this rapid spread of a new faith did not please the Roman emperors. Because the rise of Christianity meant the disruption of the established order.

For centuries, the Roman authorities pursued a policy of oppression against Christianity. There was no peace for Christians in the Roman Empire, which ruled most of the known world. Christians living in Antakya (Antioch) and Kayseri (Caesarea), the ancient cities of the past, fled to Cappadocia. They expanded the underground cities and began to live here.

We see the traces of this period in two of the most important underground cities of Cappadocia such as Kaymakli and Derinkuyu. The hiding of Christians from the persecution of the Roman governors lasted for centuries and finally ended in 313. Emperor Constantine, who reigned in the 300s, brought freedom of belief to Christians with the Edict of Milan.

However, the Cappadocian Christians continued to live here. Cappadocia became one of the religious centers of Eastern Christianity in late Roman and Byzantine periods. The rock churches and monasteries that we see today at the Goreme Open Air Museum are also from that period.

The Byzantines, who escaped from the raids organized by the Arabs in Anatolia, withdrew to the underground cities and lived there. During the Seljuk and Ottoman empires in Anatolia, it was again a shelter during the wars. Historical records show that the tunnels were used by the Greek citizens of the Ottoman Empire until the end of the First World War.

What to See in Kaymakli

The most important places to see in Kaymakli are winery, baptistery and missionary school. When you go downstairs, you can see the food stores. The holes in the tunnels for air circulation are still visible. In addition, buildings such as meeting rooms, cemeteries, churches and wells prove that there was a complex city life here.

The main periods of life in Kaymakli Underground City were the early Christian period and the middle Byzantine period. Early Christians descended into the underground city to escape Roman persecution. The Byzantines, on the other hand, took refuge here to protect themselves from the Byzantine-Arab wars that lasted for many years.

The fact that there are remnants of such a complex Christian life in Kaymakli is due to the fact that the Christians of the Byzantine Empire designed the underground city accordingly in order to maintain their customs during the war.

The photos in the article show the living areas, rooms and tunnels. The underground cities of Cappadocia were designed for temporary accommodation. However, sometimes because of the wars that lasted for months, they had to live here for a long time. This caused the underground cities to expand deeper.

Derinkuyu Underground City is a rare structure in the world. Located in Nevsehir province of Cappadocia, Derinkuyu is one of the oldest underground cities in the world.

The underground cities of Cappadocia, with their history dating back to ancient times, give clues about the lifestyle of the people in that period. These underground tunnels, which people used to protect themselves from the destruction caused by wars in both ancient and medieval times, promise an incredible experience to history lovers.

Although there are dozens of underground cities in Cappadocia, two of them stand out. Therefore, I recommend adding Derinkuyu and Kaymakli underground cities to your things to do in Cappadocia list. You can be sure you won’t be disappointed.

History of Derinkuyu Underground City

According to research, the history of Derinkuyu Underground City goes back to the Assyrian Trade Colonies in ancient times. However, the fact that it became a functional underground city dates back to the ancient Greek period.

In his book Anabasis, Xenophon mentions the existence of people living underground. It even tells us that these people live underground with large families, with their pets, and have food stores. Recent research in the Derinkuyu underground city has confirmed that Xenophon’s narratives were correct.

A Shelter for the Early Christians

Christianity was banned in the Roman Empire for centuries and a policy of oppression and persecution was carried out against Christians. Derinkuyu was a shelter for the early Christians at the time when Christianity was forbidden.

We know from historical sources that the Christians in Antakya (Antioch) and Kayseri (Caesarea) came to Cappadocia and settled in the tunnels there. The Christians, who survived the persecution of the Roman soldiers, made this place a center of worship.

The underground city has maintained its importance during the Byzantine period. A significant portion of the remains that can be seen today were built during the Byzantine Empire era.

During the Arab-Byzantine wars between 780 and 1180, the Byzantines fleeing the Arab raids settled in the underground city and lived there temporarily. Historical records show that the tunnels were used by Greek-Orthodox Ottoman citizens until the population exchange (after World War I) in 1923.

What to See in Derinkuyu?

There are many places to see in Derinkuyu underground city as it goes down 8 floors. The city was built thanks to the geological formation of Cappadocia. The tuff soil formed by the lava flowing from the volcanoes was easily shaped by the human hand because of its soft structure.

In this way, the cellars or shelters created by people under their homes have grown into a giant underground city. The fact that there are more than 200 underground cities in Cappadocia proves the necessity of hiding at that time.

Unlike other underground cities of Cappadocia, Derinkuyu has a very large capacity and has many interconnected sections. For this reason, this is the most visited underground city today.

Derinkuyu had been enlarged by adding the necessary sections over time. The rooms, cellars and halls were connected to each other by corridors. In this way, an area of thousands of square meters was obtained.

At the entrance and the first floor of the city, there are winery, baptistery and missionary school. On the lower floors, there are cellars, kitchens and food stores. The ventilation space opened to ensure air circulation in the tunnels is located on the third floor.

Research shows that the fifth floor was the center of the city. The ventilation system is largely positioned on this floor. Buildings such as meeting rooms, cemeteries, churches and water wells are located on the seventh floor, the largest part of the city.

There are two underground cities that must be seen in Cappadocia. One of them is Derinkuyu and the other is Kaymakli. If you want to learn more about the other one, you can check out the Kaymakli Underground City blog post.

Guided Tour Tickets for Derinkuyu

If you want to join a guided tour in Cappadocia, including the Derinkuyu Underground City, you can buy a ticket for the Cappadocia Green Tour. Although this tour is more expensive than standard museum tickets, it gives you the advantage of fast track.
Ihlara Valley is located in Aksaray at Guzelyurt district and it is one of nature’s wonders in Cappadocia. The eruption of lava at Hasan Mountain formed the volcanic soil, which was shaped by Melendiz River for thousands of years and Ihlara Valley is regarded as the biggest canyon in which people lived.

There are many valleys to hike in Cappadocia and all of them are interesting. However, the most distinctive feature of Ihlara Valley is that it offers us very important clues about the early Christian period.

You can find facts about the history of Ihlara Valley in this article. In addition, Ihlara Valley ticket price and opening hours are noted. You can also find a recommended guided tour to visit Ihlara Valley and its surroundings at the bottom of the page.

History of Ihlara Valley

The history of Ihlara Valley goes back to the 4th century. Here, the first rock churches were built by Christians who escaped Roman persecution. Ihlara, once called Peristrema, was one of the most important centers of monastic life throughout Byzantine history.

Ihlara symbolizes the perfect harmony of human and nature, where over 80,000 people are thought to have lived. There was a high population density at Ihlara Valley during early Christianity (the Roman Empire era) and Byzantine Empire era.

As Ihlara became a place of seclusion especially during the Byzantine Empire era, it houses a big number of churches. Kokar, Pureliseki, Agacalti, and Sumbullu Church are located on the part where you can reach by walking down 380 steps while Kemer, Egritas, Karanlikkale, and Yilanli Church are on the other side of the river.

There are so many more churches in Ihlara Valley, however, the three most visited churches are Agacalti, Sumbullu, and Yilanli Church. Before we talk about these three churches in more details, we should also explain why Cappadocia plays an important role in the history of Christianity.

Cappadocia in Early Christian Period

Cappadocia was a very important settlement in the early Christian period. After 30, the year Jesus Christ was crucified, till 313 when the Edict of Milan was declared, life for the Christians was tough.

Due to the policy of oppression led by the Roman Empire against the Christians, the believers of Christianity felt the need to practice their religion secretly. Therefore, Cappadocia stood out with its underground cities, caves, and valleys at such times.

In this respect, Kaymakli and Derinkuyu underground cities in Cappadocia served as perfect spots for Christians. However, permanent residency in underground cities was not sustainable. Thus, the residents looked for ways to live in the open air and the valleys of Cappadocia were quite suitable for that end.

Christian communities lived in Cappadocia for years and in 313 AD, Constantine, the Roman Emperor, announced that the Christians were given the freedom to practice their religion.

The Roman Empire was divided into two in 395 AD and Cappadocia was in the Eastern Roman Empire’s (Byzantium) borders. During the 50 years after Constantine, Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire and it spread everywhere.

In the empire where Christianity was accepted deeply, there were Christians who wanted to take the example of Jesus Christ’s hard lived life. These individuals who wanted Christianity to be involved in every part of their lives wanted to live in a simple way advised by Jesus Christ.

As Jesus Christ said, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.” And his followers who took heed of Jesus’ way, secluded themselves in the caves at the valleys in Cappadocia.

No matter how impressive the will power of these monks was, it didn’t help the social life at all. Therefore, St. Basil the Great, the Bishop of Caesarea (Kayseri), decided to regulate the life in monastery. As a result, the ones who wanted to seclude themselves were required to live in monasteries in small groups and produce their own food in gardens. Moreover, no monks were supposed to depend on donations.

The monasteries in Cappadocia that were based on the rules established by St. Basil the Great, enjoyed their peak times in the 11th and 13th century. Today, the churches you can see at Ihlara Valley and Goreme Open Air Museum are mostly from these centuries.

Cave Churches in Ihlara Valley

Ihlara Valley experienced its peak especially during the Middle Ages. There are many cave churches in Ihlara Valley that have survived from this period. 3 of them stand out with their frescoes and architecture.

If you arrive Ihlara Valley via Ihlara Village, after you walk down the stone stairs, you can see Agacalti Church on your right. The walls of the church are covered with various geometric figures, animal figures, and different plants figures. The different colors of yellow, red, and green used on the walls fascinate the visitors. Moreover, the images in this church date back to 11th and 13th century.

The most eye-catching drawings in the church are the depictions of Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, and Adoration of the Magi. Moreover, Ascension is depicted in the most striking way at Agacalti Church compared to other cave churches in Ihlara Valley.

2. Sumbullu Church

Sumbullu Church is located 50 meters after you walk down the stone stairs to the valley and it was carved as two floors between rocks. The church is thought to have been built in 10th century and it has walls on which crosses made of red ochre and doors shaped as horseshoes.

You can also see some scenes from Bible in the church. One of the interesting scenes is Annunciation, which depicts the moment Virgin Mary is seen with Gabriel and Michael, the archangels. Moreover, Jesus Christ is depicted on the dome of the main area.

3. Yilanli Church

Yilanli Church (aka Snake Church) can be reached via the wooden bridge nearby the entrance to Ihlara Valley. In terms of fresco, it’s not only Ihlara’s but also Cappadocia’s one of the richest churches.

On the dome of the main area, you can see a cross in relief style. In the half dome of the church on the apse side; Ascension, Jesus Christ in his youth, Virgin Mary, and John Chrysostom, one of the most prominent figures in the history of Christianity, is depicted.

On the eastern part of the cross, you can see the drawings depicting Emperor Constantine and his mother Helena, the Death of Virgin Mary, the Last Supper, and Crucifixion.

Cappadocia looks otherworldly even from the ground—the valleys of tuff and “fairy chimneys” were carved by time—but at sunrise, from a hot-air balloon, the landscape feels made for flying. The light is soft, the air still, and for about an hour you drift above vineyards, pigeon houses, and red-rose ridgelines as the day wakes below.

As a licensed tour guide based in Istanbul, I’ve accompanied guests on Cappadocia itineraries for years and have occasionally joined balloon flights myself. In this guide, I’ve gathered the practical notes I share with travelers: what really drives the price, the best months and daily take-off times, what happens when weather cancels a flight, and how safety works under Turkey’s civil aviation rules (DGCA).

If you’re ready to fly, you’ll find up-to-date tips to secure a seat, avoid common mistakes, and come home with the photographs you imagined.

Things to Know about Cappadocia Balloons

There are many things to know about Cappadocia balloons. For example, balloons fly throughout the year, including the winter months. However, departure points and the routes of tours may change depending on the daily weather conditions.

Generally, hot air balloons are in Urgup, Goreme, and Avanos, the most beautiful spots of Cappadocia. You can go to explore the places you see on the balloon flight later. Since the balloon tour lasts 3 hours including pick-up and drop off, there will be time to visit the places on your list.

1. How Does a Hot Air Balloon Work?

A hot air balloon is composed of a dome, a burner, and a basket that carries passengers. The basket is made of straws so that it is light and flexible. A burner is located on the upper side of the basket to heat the air effectively.

The dome, the balloon itself, is usually made of tear-proof plastic. A fire-proof material such as Nomex is used on the open part of the balloon. Although all hot air balloons are composed of these three parts, size, shape, deflation system, and the number of burners on each balloon vary.

The hot air balloon works by heating and cooling the air inside the dome. The pilot heats the air inside the balloon to take off and allows the air to cool down when it descends.

The direction of a hot air balloon is defined by the wind during the tour, but it can be controlled by a controller in a limited span by using the wind blowing in different directions and speed.

Cold weather is the best time for a hot air balloon tour as it enables a soft landing and maximum ascent capacity. Therefore, Cappadocia hot air balloon tours are carried out at sunrise, the coldest time of the day.

2. Best Time for a Balloon Ride in Cappadocia

As long as the weather conditions allow, balloon flights are made in Cappadocia throughout the year. However, the period between March and November is considered the tourist season. Especially the spring and autumn months when the weather is mild is the best time for a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia.

In order to show you more valleys and fairy chimneys, departure points of balloons may vary depending on the strength and the direction of wind every morning. You should also note that these tours are carried out in accordance with the regulations and rules imposed by Directorate General of Civil Aviation in Turkey.

Hot air balloon tours are allowed in up to 11km/h wind due to security reasons and they may be canceled due to adverse weather conditions. In such cases, if the authorities allow, tours may be fulfilled in the afternoon as well. However, these are rare instances that may happen several times a year.

3. What Time Do Balloons Take Off

Balloons take off between 5 and 5:30 in the morning. Cappadocia Balloon companies pick the tourists up from their hotels early morning and transfer them to departure points. While tourists enjoy their quick breakfast at the site, hot air balloons are filled with air and get ready for the ride just in 15 minutes.

After pilots inform passengers on flight safety, balloons rise 400-500 meters from the earth and tourists can enjoy the view and take photos of the sunset and beautiful Cappadocia for around 1 to 1,5 hours.

Following the landing, participants are rewarded a flight certificate they can keep as a memory and a champagne toast to celebrate the ride. It is certain that you will have wonderful moments and take great photos during the tour.

4. How Long Does a Balloon Tour Last?

The Cappadocia Balloon tour lasts an average of 1 hour, but you need to spare 3 hours for the entire activity including pick-up and drop off. Participants are transferred to a departure point from their hotel one hour prior to flight.

After a light breakfast and the approval of General Directorate of Civil Aviation, passengers are transported to the departure area of balloons. While balloons are filled with air, flight security information is shared with participants, then the tours begin.

Tours at sunrise typically last around 1 hour and it may end 10 minutes earlier or later than the expected landing time. This depends on the strength of the wind and landing point during the flight. While standard flights last 60 minutes, special flights can last from 1,5 hours to 2 hours.

5. What Happens If Your Flight Is Canceled?

Hot air balloon flights in Cappadocia are highly dependent on weather conditions, particularly wind speed and visibility. The Turkish Civil Aviation Authority conducts daily inspections at sunrise, and if wind speeds exceed safe limits (usually around 10–12 km/h) or there is heavy fog, flights are grounded for safety reasons. This decision is made on the morning of the flight, often just before passengers are scheduled to be picked up, which means cancellations can sometimes be last-minute.

If your flight is canceled due to weather, most reputable operators offer two standard options: a full refund or rescheduling to the next available day. During peak seasons, availability for rescheduling can be limited, so it’s wise to book your balloon ride for your first morning in Cappadocia. That way, if your flight is canceled, you still have extra days to try again.

Cancellations are more common in the winter months due to unpredictable winds, but they can happen in any season. The silver lining is that operators handle these situations professionally, and you will not be charged if you cannot fly. If you have booked through a platform like GetYourGuide, the refund process is typically straightforward and completed within a few business days.

6. What to Wear at Balloon Flight?

Cappadocia is 1000 meters above the sea level and it has a steppe climate. Therefore, it’s crucial to wear proper clothes at Cappadocia. Since sunrise is the coldest time of the day, it is recommended that you wear outdoor clothing during Cappadocia balloon flight.

Especially, if you are planning to participate in a hot air balloon tour in winter, you should definitely wear thicker clothes than you do on an average winter day. As you will remain standing for an hour, it’s recommended that passengers prefer flat heel shoes instead of high heels. If you plan to be in Cappadocia in spring, summer or fall, a light jacket may be sufficient depending on weather conditions.

7. Capacity of Hot Air Balloons

The capacity of a hot air balloon is from 16 to 24 passengers. Generally speaking, baskets that have 16 or 20 passenger capacity are used most frequently. As the price range for smaller baskets is higher, bigger baskets are lower-priced.

There is enough space for every passenger in baskets to enjoy the view. As hot air balloons turn in 360 degrees, passengers have the chance to take photos and videos of amazing Cappadocia in every angle.

Children under 7 years old are not permitted to participate in hot air balloon tours in Cappadocia, but anyone who is between 7-90 and able to climb on a balloon’s basket is welcome on board.

8. Is a Hot Air Balloon Flight Safe?

The hot air balloon flight is safe as the balloons go through strict controls regularly. Routes and areas to be covered by balloons are determined by the weather conditions on the day of rides.

As the air is heated, balloons rise and they go down if the air is cooled. The air inside balloons is heated after balloons are filled by a strong ventilator. While balloons are filled, flight security instructions are explained to participants and the direction of balloons is determined by the wind.

Due to legal requirements, only licensed pilots are eligible to fly these hot air balloons. In order to end your tour safely, the directions of pilots, such as taking landing position, should always be taken into consideration. These instructions are illustrated prior to departure.

The landing also depends on weather conditions and features of the landing area. The main aim for a safe landing is as few bounces and friction as possible.

Until the landing is complete as stated by the pilot, passengers are supposed to remain in landing position. These hot air balloons are examined by General Directorate of Civil Aviation and it’s made sure periodic maintenance of the balloons are performed thoroughly.

9. Choosing the Right Hot Air Balloon Company in Cappadocia

Not all hot air balloon experiences in Cappadocia are created equal, and selecting the right operator can make a noticeable difference in your flight. The most important factor to consider is pilot experience. Seasoned pilots not only ensure a safer journey but also know how to navigate for the best views depending on the wind direction. Companies like Royal Balloon and Butterfly Balloons, and Discovery Balloons have built strong reputations for their skilled and licensed pilots, many of whom have thousands of flight hours in the region.

Another key element is basket capacity. While larger baskets (20–28 passengers) can be more affordable, smaller baskets (12–16 passengers) offer a more intimate and less crowded experience, allowing better space for photography and easier movement. Butterfly Balloons, for example, is known for prioritizing smaller groups, while Royal Balloon often offers premium flights with limited passenger numbers.

Flight duration and insurance coverage should also factor into your decision. Standard flights last about 60 minutes, while deluxe options can extend to 90 minutes, providing more time to glide over the valleys and fairy chimneys. Reputable companies always include full passenger insurance in their packages — a detail worth confirming before booking. By weighing these criteria against your preferences and budget, you can choose a company that delivers both safety and unforgettable views.

10. Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Price (2026)

As of February 2026, the average price for a standard hot air balloon flight in Cappadocia ranges between $80 and $100 per person. You can reserve your place on the recommended balloon tour via this link here .

The recommended tour in this guide is currently the most popular option in Cappadocia. All bookings are processed through GetYourGuide, an internationally recognized travel platform, and can be canceled with a full refund up to 24 hours before the flight.

Conclusion

After the breathtaking views of Cappadocia from above, the adventure doesn’t have to end when your balloon lands. In fact, the landscapes you admired from the sky — the valleys carved by time, the whimsical fairy chimneys, and the mysterious underground cities — are even more fascinating up close. Exploring them on foot and with a knowledgeable guide will give you an entirely new perspective on this extraordinary region.

Cappadocia travel blog includes valleys, hills, underground cities and rock churches of Cappadocia. As a professional tour guide, I have listed the top 20 things to do in Cappadocia for you.

The unique landforms in Cappadocia were formed by wind and rain eroding the soft lava layer erupting from the Erciyes, Gullu and Hasan Mountains over the centuries. Cappadocia is a region located in the heart of Anatolia and covers a wide area spread over the cities of Nevsehir, Kayseri, Aksaray and Nigde.

Those who want to travel to Turkey usually start from Istanbul. If you want to go to Cappadocia after visiting Istanbul, traveling by plane is the most practical way. From Istanbul, you can reach Cappadocia Airport in Nevsehir in just one hour and twenty minutes.

Cappadocia can be visited in all seasons thanks to the winter season which is not too cold. Visiting Cappadocia in different seasons can give you different experiences. Snow-covered hills and fairy chimneys in winter offer a spectacular view. On the other hand, trekking in Cappadocia in spring will give you great pleasure.

If you are wondering about the best time to visit Cappadocia, I can say that this is the spring and autumn months. In these months, the weather is neither hot nor cold. These are also the best times for trekking and ballooning.

Cappadocia promises a fairy tale experience with land forms that are nowhere else in the world. For this reason, I would recommend you to spend at least two days to visit Cappadocia.

You can find insider tips that can make your trip easier on the Cappadocia travel blog. You can see the best things to do in Cappadocia in 2024 under 20 headings in the lines below.

1. Goreme Open Air Museum

Although the first historical findings about Cappadocia date back to the Hittites period, the remains of the present day are mostly from the early Christian period.

After Jesus’ death in the 30s, his apostles entered Anatolia through Antioch and began to spread Christianity. The rapid spread of monotheistic belief disturbed the Roman authorities and triggered centuries of oppression against Christians.

The Christian communities who could not perform their worship found a suitable habitat in the geography of Cappadocia. Volcanic rocks, which can be easily shaped even with simple tools, made it possible to build various living spaces.

Goreme Open Air Museum sheds light on the life of early Christians. Buckle, Apple, Snake, Dark and St Barbara churches are among the main churches to visit in Goreme Museum.

The most popular among the rock churches in Goreme is the Dark Church. These churches were the most important centers of monastic life in Cappadocia throughout the Middle Ages.

There are many historically important valleys in Cappadocia. However, you can find the most popular valleys of the region in the following six headings of the Cappadocia travel blog.

2. Devrent Valley

Devrent Valley, also known as the imagination valley, is located in Avanos. Devrent, which is also neighboring Zelve and Monks Valleys, is a place that challenges your imagination.

The fairy chimneys are associated with various animal and human forms. Especially the fairy chimney that resembles a camel is very famous. Another fairy chimney is attributed to a praying nun or Virgin Mary with her hands opened.

3. Monks Valley

The Monks Valley (aka Pasabag Valley) became a place of hermits who wanted to move away from worldly life and focus on religion especially during the Byzantine Empire period.

In the Valley of the Monks, there is a church dedicated to a famous saint who lived in Syria in the 5th century. The ascetic saint, Simeon Stylites, lived for 37 years on a platform above a column and opened a new chapter in monkhood.

4. Zelve Valley

Only one kilometer from the Valley of the Monks, Zelve Valley is home to pointed and wide-bodied fairy chimneys. Zelve Valley was very popular among religious people who escaped from the city life during the Byzantine period.

Uzumlu, Balikli and Geyikli churches can be visited in the valley which was one of the religious centers of Byzantium in the Middle Ages. The extraordinary landforms of Zelve inspired the monks.

5. Pigeon Valley

Pigeon Valley (aka Guvercinlik Valley), which covers 4 kilometers between Uchisar and Goreme, is ideal for trekking, valley biking and yoga. The name of the valley comes from the nests where people carved the rocks for pigeons.

The people of the region used the fertilizer of these pigeons in the vineyards and their eggs in the plaster of the religious frescoes. Pigeon nests from that period can still be seen in the valley.

6. Ihlara Valley

Ihlara Valley was created when the Melendiz River eroded the soft rocks and formed a 14 km long canyon with a depth of 100 to 200 meters. It is estimated that the settlement in Ihlara Valley started in the 4th century.

Thanks to the unique geological features of the region, frescoed churches carved into the rocks have survived to the present day. It is possible to visit the magnificent churches in the depths of the valley. In order to reach these hidden treasures, you have to go down 397 steps.

7. Red and Rose Valleys

Red and Rose Valleys are two neighboring valleys. Located between Cavusin and Goreme, Rose (Gulludere) Valley is home to many churches and monastery ruins. Rose Valley is a 4-kilometer trekking trail where fairy chimneys can be best viewed. Church Of Three Crosses and Ayvali Church can be seen as a heritage of Christianity.

The Red (Kizilcukur) Valley takes its name from red pumice rocks. The valley, which turns into a red color at sunset, is the best place to watch the sunset in Cappadocia. Red Valley offers great opportunities for those who want to take an Instagram photos in Cappadocia.

You can find the four most popular towns of the region in the next 4 titles of the Cappadocia travel blog. Each of these towns stands out with its own unique features.

8. Avanos

Avanos is one of the oldest pottery centers in the world. Pottery, one of the discoveries of the Neolithic, enabled people to keep enough food to protect them from famine. Pottery obtained by shaping the soil collected from the bed of the Kizilirmak (Red River) is an art that has existed in Avanos since the Hittites.

Attending pottery workshops in Avanos is among the fun things to do in Cappadocia. You can have a great time in short-term presentations and workshops for tourists. This activity is included in the program for most of the guided tours of Cappadocia. You can find advice on tours on the bottom lines.

9. Cavusin Village

Cavusin Village is located just 2 kilometers from Goreme. Cavusin, one of the oldest settlements in the Cappadocia region, is an ancient Christian settlement. There are important churches in the village, where early Christians escaped from the Roman soldiers.

The main churches to be seen in Cavusin are the Cavusin Church, and the Church of John the Baptist. In addition, the entrance of the Red & Rose valleys starts from Cavusin.

Urgup is a place where you can see the most beautiful examples of stone houses of the region. When you go to Urgup’s town center, one of the things you will notice is Temenni Hill. On this hill, you can see the most prominent Seljuk and Ottoman monuments in Cappadocia.

Urgup came to the fore with a Turkish TV series years ago. If you have heard of this TV series called Asmali Konak, the house where the series was shot can still be visited.

11. Mustafapasa

Mustafapasa (aka Sinasos), located in Urgup, was a town where the Christian people lived until 1924. After the first world war, Christians left the town because of the population exchange between Turkey and Greece.

Christians who lived in Mustafapasa left many churches and mansions built with local stonemasonry. Mustafapasa, which was named Sinasos in antiquity, is worth visiting for the churches of St. George, St. Basil, St. Stefanos and Church of Constantine and Helena (this church can be seen in the picture above).

There are 35 underground cities in the entire Cappadocia region. Underground cities used to be a shelter for early Christians to escape the Roman persecution. The next two titles of the Cappadocia travel blog introduce the two most famous underground cities.

Derinkuyu Underground City was designed as an underground shelter for people to live in emergencies. In this underground city, which is 85 meters deep, there are food stores, wine cellars, water wells and meeting rooms. There is even a ventilation system for settlers to survive raids.

Derinkuyu was designed for the early Christians who escaped from the Roman soldiers when it was first built, so there is a baptistery, a missionary school and even a place of confession. In the middle ages it was used by the Byzantine people to protect them from the Arab raids.

Kaymakli Underground City was built in 1200 BC during the Hittites. Everything was masterfully planned in this underground city. When you visit Kaymakli, which has a capacity of five thousand people, you will witness a very organized city plan.

Visiting the castles is one of the most interesting things to do in Cappadocia. The living spaces carved into the hills have been home to thousands of people. The next two topics of the Cappadocia travel blog will introduce the famous hills of the region.

14. Uchisar Castle

Uchisar Castle is the highest point where you can watch Cappadocia. It was a fortress created by Christians fleeing the persecution of the Roman authorities. The settlers carved the rocks and created living spaces for themselves.

In Cappadocia there is also Ortahisar Castle, which is slightly smaller than Uchisar. In the past, when one of these two castles was attacked by an enemy, there was an underground tunnel that allowed the people to escape to the other castle.

Uchisar can be seen in many parts of Cappadocia due to its height. It is only possible to watch Cappadocia from a higher point than Uchisar by participating in a balloon flight.

15. Ortahisar Castle

Ortahisar Castle, from a distance, looks like the biggest fairy chimney of the entire Cappadocia region. The shaping of this gigantic rock by human hands first began with the aim of protection during the Hittites. It served as a strong fortress during the Roman and Byzantine periods.

Ortahisar stands out as the most popular place for foreigners to live in Cappadocia. The foreigners who came to visit Cappadocia and were fascinated by the region bought and restored stone houses in this town and started to live here.

The next three topics of the Cappadocia travel blog are about unique things to do in Cappadocia. These three must-see places are also among the most photographed places in Cappadocia.

In the early years of Christianity, Anatolia was one of the regions where the apostles spread Christianity. For this reason, ancient cities of Anatolia such as Ephesus and Antioch are on the pilgrimage route of Christians. Another place that Christians want to see in Turkey is Cappadocia and its cave monasteries. These monasteries are from the Byzantine period when monastic life was at its peak in Cappadocia.

In addition, some early Church Fathers, who were recognized and respected by all sects of Christianity, also lived in Anatolia. Examples include St. Nicholas, Basil the Great and John Chrysostom.

Saint Basil, one of the three important saints mentioned in the upper line, was born in Caesarea (Kayseri) in 330. Bringing a new discipline to the early monastery life, Saint Basil the Great is highly respected in churches all over the world, especially in the Orthodox Christian church.

The spread of Christianity began with Jesus’ death in 30s. The apostles went to the prominent cities of the ancient world, spreading Christianity. St. Peter, the most important apostle of Jesus, founded the Cave Church of Saint Peter in Antioch. St. John came to Ephesus with the Virgin Mary. Today, the house of the Virgin Mary and St. John’s Basilica can still be seen in Ephesus.

However, Christianity, which began to spread rapidly, was not welcomed by the Roman Empire. Romans with polytheistic religion followed a policy of persecution over Christianity for years. During this period, those who died for Christianity became martyrs. St. George, a Roman officer, was one of the most famous figures of this period. There are many churches in Turkey dedicated to him.

There is a 300-year period in which Christians had to hide for worship. During this period, Cappadocia region was one of the most popular places. Christians hiding in underground cities such as Derinkuyu and Kaymakli were finally freed in 313 with the Edict of Milan issued by Emperor Constantine.

The principles of Christianity were determined by the First Council of Nicaea. In half a century from Emperor Constantine to Emperor Theodosius, Christianity became the state religion of Rome. The first examples of Christian Monasticism emerged under these favorable conditions.

The faithful Christians, who followed the suffering of Jesus, wanted to live like him. A chapter in the Bible that describes the retreat of Jesus in the desert was an example of monks. It is believed that Jesus fasted in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights and resisted Satan’s temptations.

The first monk to retreat to practice Jesus’ example was Saint Anthony the Great. This cleric, also known as “Saint Anthony of Egypt”, opened a new chapter in Christian worship. Today there is a monastery in Egypt dedicated to Saint Anthony. The Monastery of Saint Anthony whose picture you can see above, symbolizes such a deep history.

Cave Monasteries in Cappadocia

Living the monk’s life soon became popular. Young and passionate Christians wanted to push the limits of human will. They also wanted to experience the simple life that Jesus recommended. There was no traditional example of monastic life in the early period. Individuals followed their own path and did not recognize the authority of the church that organized Christianity.

The most famous monk of early Christianity Saint Simeon Stylites was a “Column Saint”. Although it may seem strange at first glance, St. Simeon was undoubtedly the most popular person of this period. Simeon, who began to live on a rock near today’s city of Aleppo, then turned his residence into a column and spent his life there. People who admired his will showed up every day and brought him food and water.

Simeon’s fame spread throughout the Christian world, and his place became a center of pilgrimage. Many monks followed the path he opened. There lived another monk named Simeon Stylites the Younger, who followed the example of the first Saint Simeon. Today there is a church dedicated to Simeon Stylites the Younger in Cappadocia and a monastery in Antioch (now Antakya).

The reason I explained this was how early Christian monks followed an improvised method. Those who wanted to retreat also flocked to Cappadocia, which was a convenient geography. The main reason for this was the tufted soil of Cappadocia, which could be easily shaped with simple cutting tools. Thus, the first examples of cave monasteries in Cappadocia were built. In the early period of monastic life in Cappadocia, single-person caves were common.

Anatolian Christians, who wanted to isolate themselves from society, settled in the caves here in the 4th century. But the people who were in seclusion had to eat something. They could only meet their needs with the help of people around, like Simeon in the previous example. This system, which the monks had always consumed and never participated in production, would create social problems.

The Rule of Saint Basil the Great

Saint Basil the Great was born in 329 in Caesarea (now Kayseri). Caesarea a city in the Cappadocia region, was one of the most important Christian centers of Eastern Anatolia. In time, Saint Basil ascended to the bishop of Caesarea and became the highest ranking cleric in the city.

Touring the valleys of Cappadocia, Basil examined the life of the monks. No matter how admirable the monks endured, it produced no value for society. It was also outside the church organization represented by Basil the Great.

He decided to gather the Christian monks, which had spread to the valleys of Cappadocia, under a new discipline. Accordingly, the monks would live in small groups, not alone. Within each monastery there would be a certain hierarchy and would be ruled with absolute discipline. The monks would be under the domination of the bishop of the city and would follow the order of the church.

In the monasteries there would be chapels to pray alone, as well as dining rooms that would make a common life possible. Cappadocia Monasteries would produce their own food in the garden of the church and would not depend on the outside. Thus, small groups of monks in the monasteries would also participate in production and lead a life in harmony with society.

These rules set by St. Basil set an example for monastic life all over the world. Because of this important role in Christianity, St. Basil is respected in all Christian sects. He was honored as one of the three great patriarchs in the Eastern Church.

The saints, known as the Three Holy Hierarchs, are Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nazianzus, and John Chrysostom of Antioch. The relics of these three scholars can now be seen in the Patriarchal Church of St George in Istanbul.

Monastic Life in Byzantine Cappadocia

Volcanic lands formed in millions of years after the eruption of volcanoes in Cappadocia made a unique monastic life possible here. The fairy-tale geography of Cappadocia allowed the monks to dedicate themselves to Jesus as if they were in another world.

Those who visit Cappadocia today visit the monastery churches, the foundation of which was laid by Saint Basil. Examples of monastery life in Cappadocia can be seen in all Cappadocia valleys, especially the Ihlara Valley and Goreme Open Air Museum.

Monastic life in Byzantine Cappadocia peaked between the 11th and 13th centuries. Today, traces of that period can still be seen in Byzantine mosaics in the cave churches of Cappadocia.

Of course, it is difficult to understand the perspective of people who lived in the Middle Ages under the conditions of today. In order to understand how the people of that time devoted themselves to monkhood, it is necessary to read the life of religious scholars such as St. Simeon, St. Basil and St. Antonius.

By reading the lives of these early religious scholars, you can add a special meaning to your visit to the rock churches of Cappadocia. The Dark Church, Buckle Church and Selime Monastery in Cappadocia enable you to trace this period.

The Göreme Open Air Museum is one of the most extraordinary cultural sites in Cappadocia — a place where history, faith, and landscape converge in a way found almost nowhere else in the world. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985, this remarkable open-air complex is home to rock-cut churches, chapels, and monasteries carved directly into Cappadocia’s soft volcanic stone and decorated with centuries-old Byzantine frescoes.

Walking through the narrow valleys of Göreme feels like stepping into the early centuries of Christianity. These cave churches, once used by monks and monastic communities, still preserve vivid biblical scenes that reveal how faith, daily life, and art were intertwined in medieval Anatolia. Beyond its geological beauty, the museum offers a rare window into the spiritual and cultural foundations of Christian civilization.

This article is designed as a practical visitor’s guide for travelers planning to visit the Göreme Open Air Museum in 2026. However, as a historian and licensed guide, I also approach sites like Göreme as part of a larger historical continuum. Insider’s Note:
Many visitors wonder whether the Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise) is worth the additional ticket; from a guide’s perspective, it is the highlight of the Göreme Open Air Museum, with the best-preserved frescoes in all of Cappadocia thanks to its limited exposure to light. The site also becomes crowded and noticeably hot from mid-morning onward, especially in summer, so arriving right at opening (08:00) offers cooler temperatures, softer light for photography, and a much calmer atmosphere. To better understand the biblical scenes and monastic life depicted on these rock-cut walls, many travelers find that a guided walking tour adds valuable historical context (see tour options below).

The history of the Göreme Valley stretches back to ancient Anatolia, with archaeological traces reaching as far as the Hittite period. However, the monuments visible today largely date from the Roman and Byzantine eras, when the region became a major center of early Christian life.

During the Roman period, Christianity was frequently persecuted, prompting believers to seek refuge in remote and defensible landscapes. Cappadocia’s soft volcanic rock made it possible to carve dwellings, tunnels, and chapels directly into the terrain. These natural shelters gradually evolved into organized monastic settlements, laying the foundations of Göreme’s religious landscape.

Göreme retained its spiritual significance throughout the Middle Ages. Most of the churches and monastic structures visible today were created between the 11th and 13th centuries, a period when monastic life flourished under Byzantine rule. Monks seeking ascetic devotion gathered here, forming communities governed by strict spiritual discipline. The Göreme Open Air Museum is therefore not a single monument, but a living record of centuries of religious practice.

Anatolia played a central role in the formative centuries of Christianity. Many of the most influential saints and church leaders were born, lived, or taught in this region, placing several cities in modern-day Turkey along the Christian pilgrimage routes.

Saint Nicholas, known worldwide as Santa Claus, lived in Demre on the Mediterranean coast. Saint George, one of Christianity’s most venerated saints, was born in Cappadocia. The cave church traditionally associated with Saint Peter can still be seen in Antakya. Saint Simeon Stylites, famous for his ascetic life atop a column, influenced monastic traditions across Syria and Anatolia.

Among all these figures, Saint Basil the Great left the deepest mark on Cappadocia. Born in Caesarea (modern Kayseri) in the 4th century, Basil reshaped early monastic life by introducing a disciplined communal system. The monastic rules he established — known as The Rule of Saint Basil — became the foundation of Eastern Christian monasticism and directly shaped the communities centered around Göreme.

Understanding figures such as Basil the Great, John Chrysostom, and the stylite saints is essential to understanding both Byzantine spirituality and the Christian history of Constantinople. The monastic traditions developed in Anatolia later influenced church life across Europe, contributing profoundly to Western religious and artistic culture. When you walk through Göreme’s churches, you are not only visiting Cappadocia — you are standing at the roots of European Christian civilization.

Rock Churches of the Göreme Open Air Museum

The Göreme Open Air Museum contains some of the most important rock-cut churches in Cappadocia, each offering insight into medieval monastic life and Byzantine art.

1. Saint Barbara Church

Dedicated to an early Christian martyr, Saint Barbara Church is notable for its symbolic frescoes and unusual decorative motifs. Animal figures such as dragons and serpents appear alongside Christian imagery, reflecting the symbolic visual language of the period. The Christ Pantocrator depiction remains one of its most striking features.

2. Elmalı (Apple) Church

Dating to the 12th century, Elmalı Church is a cross-planned structure with nine domes supported by four columns. Its frescoes depict key biblical scenes, including the Last Supper, the Resurrection of Lazarus, and Christ’s entry into Jerusalem. Despite its age, the church is remarkably well preserved.

3. Yılanlı (Snake) Church

Built in the 11th century, Yılanlı Church takes its name from the depiction of Saint George battling a dragon-like creature. Though the frescoes are simpler in execution, they convey the spiritual intensity of the era and offer valuable insight into popular religious imagery.

4. Tokalı (Buckle) Church

Tokalı Church is the largest and most complex church in Göreme, consisting of four interconnected sections. The Old and New Churches feature some of the finest fresco cycles in Cappadocia, distinguished by their vivid blue tones and narrative richness.

5. Karanlık (Dark) Church in Göreme

The Dark Church contains the best-preserved frescoes in Cappadocia, thanks to minimal exposure to light over the centuries. A separate ticket is required for entry. Its depiction of Christ Pantocrator is among the most celebrated examples of Byzantine art in Anatolia and is frequently featured in scholarly publications.

The artistic traditions visible in these churches later influenced Western European church art. Byzantine scholars who migrated west before and after the fall of Constantinople in 1453 carried classical knowledge that helped shape the Renaissance. In this sense, Göreme’s frescoes are not isolated works — they are part of the cultural genealogy of the West.
