As of April 2026, Istanbulkart remains the standard payment method for using Istanbul’s public transportation network. It is accepted across metros, trams, ferries, Metrobus, funiculars, and buses, and is the primary way both residents and visitors access the city’s transit system.

Today, travelers can choose between the classic physical Istanbulkart, the Istanbulkart Mobile app with QR-code payment, or contactless credit and debit cards accepted at many stations and turnstiles. This guide explains each option in detail, along with where to buy Istanbulkart, how to top up credit, transfer discounts, and refund rules.

Istanbulkart is a reloadable contactless transit card that lowers per-ride costs and allows discounted transfers between many connected lines. For the wider network structure and station planning, see my Istanbul Public Transportation Map and Istanbul T1 Tram Map guides.

This guide reflects more than 20 years of daily experience using Istanbul’s public transportation as a licensed Istanbul tour guide, both personally and while leading travelers across the city. In the rest of this guide, buying options, top-up methods, transfer discounts, and refunds are covered separately with practical detail.

The card prices, fare structure, vending machine locations, and payment methods described in this guide were reviewed through direct use of Istanbul’s transport payment system by licensed Istanbul tour guide Serhat Engul in April 2026.

This page reflects the current system, including the standard fare, the transfer discount structure, and alternatives such as the Istanbulkart Mobile app and contactless bank card payments at turnstiles.

As fares, machine locations, and payment options may occasionally change during the year, this guide is periodically reviewed and updated.

How to Buy Istanbul Travel Card?

Buying an Istanbulkart is still the most practical way to use public transport in Istanbul, especially if you plan to travel frequently or transfer between different lines. The classic Istanbulkart can be purchased from the yellow-and-black “Biletmatik” machines located at metro, tram, ferry, and major bus stations across the city — including key areas such as Sultanahmet, Taksim, and major transport hubs.

On the machine’s main screen, simply select Istanbulkart, complete the payment, and collect your card from the slot below. As of April 2026, the price of a blank Istanbulkart is 165 Turkish Lira, which is a non-refundable card fee.

You do not need to insert the exact amount. If you pay more than the card price — for example, 200 TL — the machine will issue your card and automatically load the remaining balance as travel credit onto it. This allows you to start using public transport immediately without a separate top-up step.

That said, it’s important to know that buying a physical card is no longer the only option. Many visitors now use contactless credit or debit cards directly at turnstiles, or prefer the Istanbulkart Mobile app, which allows access via QR code on your smartphone. These alternatives can be especially convenient for short stays or late-night arrivals, while the physical Istanbulkart remains the best choice for longer visits and frequent travel.

Insider’s Note: If you arrive in Istanbul by plane, Istanbulkart vending machines are available in the arrivals hall at both Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW). This allows you to buy a card on arrival and start using public transportation directly from the airport.

For travelers arriving late at night, with heavy luggage, or staying outside the central transport hubs, public transport from the airport is not always the most comfortable option on the first day. Travelers who prefer a direct door-to-door arrival often choose to book a private airport transfer service for the journey from Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) to their hotel.

Where to Buy Istanbulkart in Sultanahmet

If you are staying in or visiting Sultanahmet, the easiest place to buy an Istanbulkart is at the yellow-and-black “Biletmatik” machines located next to Sultanahmet Tram Station (T1 line). This station sits right in the heart of the Old City and is within walking distance of Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and the Basilica Cistern.

To find the station, simply follow the tram tracks along Divanyolu Street — the main road connecting Sultanahmet to the Grand Bazaar. If Hagia Sophia is behind you, walk in the direction of the Grand Bazaar for about five minutes. Once you reach the tram stop, the ticket machines will be clearly visible near the platforms.

This location is especially convenient for first-time visitors, as it allows you to buy your card and start using trams, metros, and ferries immediately without leaving the historic area. Many visitors who buy their card here also plan to visit Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, and Topkapı Palace on the same day. Travelers who plan to see all three on the same day often prefer to book a combined skip-the-line ticket online before their visit.

Where to Buy Istanbulkart in Taksim

In Taksim, Istanbulkart can be purchased from Biletmatik machines located at several major transport points connected to Istiklal Street and the city’s metro network.

You’ll find machines at:

M2 Metro Station (Taksim Square): Located at the northeastern end of Istiklal Street, directly beneath Taksim Square

F2 Tünel Funicular Station: Situated at the southwestern end of Istiklal Street, closer to Galata Tower

T2 Nostalgic Tram stops: Running between Taksim Square and Tünel along Istiklal Street

The T2 Nostalgic Tram connects these points on the surface, while the M2 Metro and F2 Funicular provide fast underground access to other parts of the city. No matter which end of Istiklal Street you are on, you can easily reach a machine and purchase your Istanbulkart within minutes.

Insider’s Note: When using a physical Istanbulkart, you pay the standard fare of 42 TL at turnstiles. If you choose contactless credit or debit card payment instead, the charged amount is usually slightly higher due to possible bank fees or exchange rate policies applied by your card provider.

Price of Istanbul Travel Card for 2026

As of April 2026, the price of a blank Istanbulkart is 165 Turkish Lira. This amount is the card fee itself and does not include travel credit. Once you purchase the card, you can load any amount of balance onto it and use it across Istanbul’s entire public transport network.

Each standard ride — including metro, tram, bus, ferry, and funicular lines — currently costs 42 Turkish Lira per person. When using a Biletmatik machine, you do not need to insert the exact card price. For example, if you insert 300 TL, the machine will issue your Istanbulkart and automatically load the remaining 135 TL as travel credit, allowing you to start traveling immediately.

One of the main advantages of Istanbulkart is its flexibility. The card can be topped up easily at stations throughout the city, and a single card can be used for multiple passengers. This makes it especially practical for couples, families, or small groups. As long as there is enough balance on the card, you do not need to buy separate cards for each person.

Another key benefit is the transfer discount system. Istanbulkart charges the full fare on the first ride, but applies reduced fares on up to three subsequent transfers made within a two-hour time window. Each transfer becomes progressively cheaper, making Istanbulkart the most cost-effective option for travelers who combine metro, tram, bus, or ferry journeys during the same trip.

Transfer Discounts for Istanbulkart 2026

One of the most attractive features of Istanbulkart is its automatic transfer discount system, which rewards passengers who change vehicles within a short time. When you use the same card for consecutive trips, the fare becomes cheaper with each transfer, making daily travel noticeably more affordable.

As of April 25, 2026, the standard fares work as follows:

First ride: 42,00 TL

Second ride: 31,27 TL

Third ride: 24,02 TL

Fourth ride: 15,62 TL

These discounts apply when you make transfers within a two-hour window, and they are valid on the public transport lines most commonly used by visitors, including metro, tram, and city ferries. For travelers who combine different transport modes — for example, tram to metro, or metro to ferry — the savings add up quickly.

It’s important to note that not all transport lines follow the same fare structure. Cross-continental routes such as Marmaray and Metrobus, as well as some buses that travel between the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, use higher base fares. While Istanbulkart can still be used on these lines, the transfer discount amounts may differ.

How to Get Refund on Istanbulkart?

Refunds on Istanbulkart are not available for every journey. They apply mainly to long-distance transport lines such as Marmaray and Metrobus, which operate across large sections of the city and often connect the European and Asian sides of Istanbul.

On these lines, the system initially charges a maximum fare when you enter. This is because Marmaray and Metrobus operate on a distance-based pricing system, assuming you may travel all the way to the final stop. If you get off earlier, the unused portion of the fare is automatically eligible for a refund.

To receive this refund, simply look for the refund machines located near station exits. These machines are usually placed after the turnstiles, especially at busy and central stations to prevent queues. As shown in the photo above, you only need to tap your Istanbulkart on the refund device, and the unused balance will be returned to your card instantly.

It’s also important to clarify a common misunderstanding. In the past, Istanbulkart itself functioned like a refundable deposit: the card could be returned at kiosks, and the card fee was refunded before the card was reissued to another user. This system no longer exists. Today, Istanbulkart cards cannot be returned or refunded. With millions of cards in circulation, the card itself no longer has a refundable value — only unused distance-based fares on specific lines can be reclaimed.

How to Top Up Istanbulkart?

Topping up your Istanbulkart is quick and straightforward. In most metro, tram, and ferry stations across Istanbul, you’ll find the familiar yellow-and-black machines labeled “Biletmatik” — like the one shown in the photo above. These are the standard Istanbulkart top-up machines, and they handle the vast majority of card reloads in the city.

Using a Biletmatik machine usually takes less than 30 seconds. Simply place your card on the reader, select the amount you want to load, and complete the payment. These machines are designed for everyday use and are the easiest option for visitors, as they are widely available throughout the transport network.

In some very central and high-traffic stations, you may also come across new-generation blue machines, which are larger — roughly the size of an ATM. These newer machines serve the same purpose and can also be used to top up Istanbulkart, but they are still limited to certain locations. If you are unsure, the yellow-and-black Biletmatik machines remain the safest and most reliable choice.

Next to many Biletmatik machines, you may notice another device labeled “Jetonmatik.” These machines sell single-use tokens for one-time trips. While useful in emergencies, one-way tokens cost 60 TL per ride, compared with 42 TL when using an Istanbulkart, and they do not offer transfer discounts. For visitors planning more than a few rides, the 165 TL card fee is usually offset within the first day of regular travel, making Istanbulkart the more practical and economical option.

FAQ – Common Issues for Visitors Using Istanbulkart

Using Istanbulkart as a visitor in Istanbul is generally straightforward, but there are a few important differences between how the system works for locals and for short-term travelers. Most confusion happens when expectations don’t match reality — especially around discounts, refunds, and limits.

Below you’ll find clear answers to the most common questions we hear from visitors, based on real on-the-ground experience and current regulations in 2026.

Do tourists get the same discounts and refunds as locals?

No. Transfer discounts, public holiday benefits, and distance-based refunds are available only for personalized Istanbulkarts, which require a Turkish ID number or a valid residence permit.

Visitors using anonymous (tourist) Istanbulkarts are charged the standard fare on each ride. This includes:

No transfer discounts

No free rides on public holidays

No partial refunds on long-distance lines such as Marmaray or Metrobus

This distinction is one of the most misunderstood aspects of the system.

Can tourists personalize their Istanbulkart?

No. Personalization is not possible without a Turkish ID number or residence permit. Registration must be completed through the official Istanbulkart system, which verifies local identification.

If you are visiting Istanbul temporarily, you should plan to use either:

An anonymous Istanbulkart

Or contactless credit/debit cards at supported turnstiles

Is there a top-up limit for tourist cards?

Yes. Anonymous Istanbulkarts have a monthly top-up limit, which is periodically adjusted by local authorities. In recent years, this limit has typically been around 500 TL per month, though exact figures may change.

If you are:

Sharing one card among multiple travelers

Staying for an extended period

Using Marmaray, Metrobus, or ferries frequently

you may reach this limit faster than expected. Locals rarely encounter this issue, but visitors sometimes do.

Why didn’t my card get a free ride on a public holiday?

Because public holiday gratuities apply only to personalized Istanbulkarts. Anonymous tourist cards are always charged the regular fare, even on national holidays.

This is normal behavior and not a malfunction of the system.

Can I share my Istanbulkart with another traveler?

Yes. One Istanbulkart can be used by multiple passengers, as long as there is enough balance on the card.

However, when using an anonymous/tourist card:

Each ride is charged at the full fare

No transfer discounts are applied

The monthly top-up limit may be reached sooner

For couples or small groups, sharing one card is convenient. For longer stays or heavy daily travel, separate cards — or contactless payment — may be more practical.

Conclusion

Getting around Istanbul may look complicated at first, but once you understand how the system works, it quickly becomes part of the city’s rhythm. Istanbulkart — whether used as a physical card, through the mobile app, or alongside contactless payment — remains the backbone of public transport in Istanbul and the easiest way to move confidently between neighborhoods.

For most visitors, having an Istanbulkart ready early — ideally at the airport or near your accommodation — makes the first days in the city much smoother. At the same time, knowing your alternatives helps you stay flexible, especially for short stays or spontaneous trips. With the basics covered, Istanbul’s transport system stops being something you worry about and starts working quietly in the background.

As of April 2026, Istanbul’s T1 Tram remains one of the most useful public transport lines for visitors, connecting Bağcılar on the European side of Istanbul with Kabataş on the Bosphorus waterfront. Along the way, it passes through key central areas such as Sultanahmet, Eminönü, and Karaköy. From Kabataş, the F1 funicular also provides a direct connection to Taksim Square.

This page is designed to make the line easier to understand. Below, you will find an updated T1 Tram map, a clear overview of the main stations, and practical information on tickets and Istanbulkart use. If you already know which stop you need, simply scroll down to the relevant station.

To use the T1 Tram and most of Istanbul’s public transportation system, you will need an Istanbulkart. This reloadable transit card works across trams, metros, ferries, Metrobus, and buses, and is typically the most practical option for regular travel in the city. If you are visiting for the first time, I have explained everything in detail in my Istanbulkart: Where to Buy and How to Use guide.

This guide reflects more than 20 years of daily experience using Istanbul’s T1 Tram as a licensed Istanbul tour guide, both personally and while leading travelers through the Old City and beyond. In the rest of this guide, each station is covered separately with its own practical overview based on real visitor needs.

The stations, transfer points, and routes in this guide were reviewed through direct use of the T1 Tram line by licensed Istanbul tour guide Serhat Engul in April 2026.

This page reflects the current station sequence from Bağcılar to Kabataş, the active F1 funicular connection to Taksim Square, and the most practical route structure for visitors exploring the Old City and Beyoğlu.

As stations, timetables, and transfer arrangements may occasionally change during the year, this guide is periodically reviewed and updated.

On the map above, the Tram T1 route is shown in dark blue, clearly marking one of the most useful transport lines for visitors. The line runs between Bağcılar, a residential area on the European side, and Kabataş, a major transportation hub on the Bosphorus shoreline.

From Kabataş Tram Station, travelers can transfer to the F1 Funicular, which provides a fast connection to Taksim Square. This makes it easy to reach the main attractions of Beyoğlu, often referred to as Istanbul’s New City, including Istiklal Street and Galata Tower.

Kabataş also serves as an important ferry terminal. From here, you can cross to the Asian side of Istanbul and visit lively districts such as Kadıköy and Üsküdar. In addition, Bosphorus cruise boats, including services operated by Dentur, depart from Kabataş and offer scenic tours along the strait.

Within walking distance of Kabataş Tram Station, visitors can reach Dolmabahçe Palace, one of the most impressive landmarks of the city. Nearby, Beşiktaş FC Stadium, the home ground of Beşiktaş, is also easily accessible on foot, making Kabataş a convenient starting point for both sightseeing and local experiences.

You can also access the official Tram T1 map prepared by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) via the blue button below.
Istanbul Tram T1 Line Stations (2026)

The T1 Tram line includes many more stops than the ones covered in this guide. However, the 12 stations listed below are the most relevant for foreign visitors, as they provide direct access to Istanbul’s main touristic areas. Each of these stops is located within walking distance of major landmarks, including museums, historic sites, and shopping areas.

For travelers who want to explore Istanbul Old City, the T1 Tram is by far the most convenient option. The line connects key sights such as the Grand Bazaar, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, and the Spice Bazaar along a single, easy-to-use route.

In addition to the Old City, the T1 Tram also allows travelers to cross the Golden Horn and reach the lively streets of Beyoğlu, making it a practical choice for visitors who want to explore both the historic core and the modern side of Istanbul without dealing with traffic or complicated transfers.

1. Zeytinburnu Tram Station

Zeytinburnu Tram Station is best known today as the most convenient stop for shopping malls along the T1 line. Since shopping options are very limited in the Old City, many visitors use the T1 Tram from central areas such as Sultanahmet to reach large shopping centers outside the historic core.

The station provides easy access to Marmara Forum Shopping Center, one of Istanbul’s largest malls, offering a wide range of international brands, restaurants, cafés, and entertainment options. For visitors looking to combine sightseeing with modern shopping, Zeytinburnu is the most practical tram stop on the T1 route.

In the past, Zeytinburnu was also an important transfer point for airport access. Before the closure of Atatürk Airport, changing from the T1 Tram to the M1 Metro at Zeytinburnu was one of the fastest ways to reach Istanbul’s former international airport. With the opening of Istanbul Airport, this role has largely disappeared, and the station is no longer relevant for airport-related travel.

Among the shopping centers reachable via the T1 line, Marmara Forum and Historia Shopping Center are the two closest options to the Old City. Between the two, Marmara Forum stands out with its larger size, broader selection of shops, and more dining options, while Historia is smaller and more limited in scope.

2. Haseki Tram Station

Haseki Tram Station is a convenient stop for visitors who want to reach Historia Shopping Center, a medium-sized shopping mall located within walking distance of the station. Historia stands out as the closest shopping center to the Old City, making it a practical option for travelers staying in central areas such as Sirkeci, Sultanahmet, Beyazıt, and Laleli.

Istanbul is home to many large and popular shopping malls—including İstinye Park, Kanyon, Cevahir, Mall of Istanbul, Akasya, and Zorlu Center—which offer a much wider selection of shops and entertainment. However, for visitors staying in Old City hotels, these malls usually require longer metro journeys or multiple transfers.

For this reason, Historia Shopping Center remains the easiest and most accessible shopping option for travelers based in the Old City. While it may not match the scale of Istanbul’s major malls, its central location and simple access via the T1 Tram make Haseki Tram Station a practical stop for short shopping breaks during sightseeing days.

3. Aksaray Tram Station

Aksaray Tram Station is one of Istanbul’s most important public transportation hubs, as it offers easy connections to both the Marmaray and Yenikapı Ferry Terminal. After getting off the T1 Tram at Aksaray, you can reach the Marmaray Station with a short walk, making it a highly efficient transfer point for crossing the city.

Using Marmaray, travelers can reach Sirkeci—the heart of the Old City—in about 4 minutes. Continuing eastward, the same line takes you to Üsküdar on the Asian side in roughly 8 minutes, and to Ayrılık Çeşmesi in approximately 12 minutes.

The Marmaray undersea tunnel runs beneath the Bosphorus, allowing passengers to travel between Europe and Asia much faster than ferries and without being affected by weather or sea traffic. For visitors who want a quick and predictable crossing, this is one of the most efficient transport options in Istanbul.

After reaching Ayrılık Çeşmesi, travelers can transfer to the M4 Metro Line to continue to Kadıköy. Kadıköy is widely regarded as the best area on the Asian side for shopping, dining, and local life, making Aksaray Tram Station a strategic stop for visitors who want to explore both sides of Istanbul in a single day.

Insider’s Note: From Aksaray Tram Station, Yenikapı Station — the main Marmaray hub on the Historic Peninsula — is within a short walk. From Yenikapı, you can cross to the Asian side via Marmaray or transfer to the M2 metro line for Taksim Square. This makes Aksaray a practical transfer point for visitors staying in the western part of the Historic Peninsula.

4. Beyazıt Tram Station

Beyazıt Tram Station is located right next to the Grand Bazaar, making it one of the most important stops on the T1 Tram line for visitors interested in shopping and historical sites. The closest entrance of the Grand Bazaar to the tram station is Gate 7, one of the main access points to the market.

Entering through Gate 7 leads directly to Kalpakçılarbaşı Street, the main spine of the Grand Bazaar. By following this central route, visitors can walk all the way to Gate 1 and exit toward Sultanahmet via Nuruosmaniye Street. This street, located just outside the Grand Bazaar, offers a pleasant walking route lined with elegant shops and historic buildings.

While the walk between Gate 7 and Gate 1 may look straightforward on a map, navigating inside the Grand Bazaar is rarely that simple. With over 60 streets and thousands of shops, it is very easy to lose your sense of direction once you step off the main axis. For this reason, Beyazıt Tram Station is best used as a clear entry or exit point, especially for first-time visitors exploring the bazaar.

Sultanahmet Tram Station is the busiest stop on the T1 Tram line and the main arrival point for visitors exploring Istanbul’s historic core. Every day, hundreds of travelers use the T1 Tram to reach Sultanahmet, avoiding Istanbul’s unpredictable traffic and stepping directly into the heart of the Old City.

As shown on the route map, the highest concentration of historic monuments in the Old City lies between Beyazıt, Sultanahmet, and Gülhane Tram Stations. Iconic landmarks such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, and several major museums are all located within easy walking distance. Exploring Sultanahmet properly usually takes a full day, even at a relaxed pace. Visitors who plan to see all three on the same day often prefer to reserve a combo ticket covering all three in advance, especially in spring and summer when ticket lines tend to be longer.

While Sultanahmet is unrivaled for daytime sightseeing, the area is relatively quiet in the evening. Visitors staying in the Old City often use the T1 Tram to travel to livelier districts after sunset, such as Galata, Taksim, or Beşiktaş, which offer a wider selection of restaurants, bars, and nightlife venues.

6. Gülhane Tram Station

Gülhane Tram Station is one of the most convenient stops for visitors who want to reach the Istanbul Archaeological Museums and Gülhane Park on foot. Although both sites lie within the outer boundaries of Topkapı Palace, they are easily accessible from the Gülhane Tram Stop.

To reach these landmarks, visitors pass through the Gülhane Gate, one of the secondary entrances of Topkapı Palace. After entering through this gate, Gülhane Park opens up directly in front of you, offering a peaceful green space in the heart of the Old City. Following the path slightly uphill to the right leads to the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, which will appear on your left-hand side.

Inside Gülhane Park, visitors can also find the Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam. This lesser-known museum displays a fascinating collection of historical scientific instruments and is often overlooked by first-time visitors, making Gülhane Tram Station a rewarding stop for those interested in both history and culture.

7. Sirkeci Tram Station

Sirkeci Tram Station is located in the heart of the Old City and sits in one of Istanbul’s most lively historic neighborhoods. Busy throughout the day, Sirkeci has served as an important trading, dining, and transportation area since the Ottoman period, and it continues to attract both locals and visitors.

The tram stop opens onto a historic square, where one of the most notable landmarks is the Sirkeci Railway Station. This elegant station was once the final stop of the Orient Express, the legendary train that connected Paris and Istanbul, and it remains one of the most atmospheric places in the district.

Sirkeci is also well known for its excellent street food and traditional eateries. The area is filled with dessert shops, local restaurants, and long-established food spots popular with residents. In particular, Hocapaşa Street stands out for its concentration of quality restaurants and casual dining options, making it an ideal stop for lunch or dinner during sightseeing.

Another cultural highlight of Sirkeci is its connection to Istanbul’s whirling dervish tradition. The Hodjapasha Cultural Center, located on Hocapaşa Street, hosts one of the city’s most respected whirling dervish performances, offering visitors a meaningful cultural experience within walking distance of the tram station.

Insider’s Note: From Sirkeci Tram Station, the Sirkeci Marmaray Station is within a short walk, offering a direct crossing to the Asian side of Istanbul. This is the closest Marmaray connection to Sultanahmet and Eminönü, making it a practical choice for visitors staying in the historic core and heading to the Asian side.

8. Eminönü Tram Station

Eminönü Tram Station is located right next to the Spice Bazaar, one of the most atmospheric markets in the Old City. Inside the bazaar, visitors can find Turkish delight, tea leaves, saffron, local nuts, and a wide variety of spices. Dating back over 300 years, the Spice Bazaar is often compared to a smaller version of the Grand Bazaar, but with a more compact and intimate atmosphere.

Just outside the Spice Bazaar stands Hamdi Restaurant, widely regarded as one of the best kebab restaurants in Istanbul. Nearby, the Rüstem Pasha Mosque is another highlight of the area, famous for its exceptional İznik tilework, considered among the finest examples in the city.

Eminönü is also a central meeting point for Istanbul street food tours, many of which begin around the Spice Bazaar. The surrounding streets are filled with iconic local flavors such as döner, kokoreç, and the classic fish sandwich, making the area a must-visit for food-focused travelers.

Since the opening of the T5 Eminönü–Alibeyköy Tram Line in 2023, Eminönü Tram Station has gained additional importance as a transfer point. Travelers can now switch between T1 and T5 and explore the Golden Horn from east to west by rail. This connection makes it easy to reach historic districts such as Fener and Balat, Ayvansaray, and Eyüp, including access to Pierre Loti Hill, without relying on buses or ferries.

Insider’s Note: From Eminönü Tram Station, you can transfer directly to the T5 tram line, which follows the shores of the Golden Horn. This scenic route provides direct access to historic neighborhoods such as Fener, Balat, and Eyüp, without needing buses or ferries. For visitors interested in exploring neighborhoods beyond Sultanahmet, this is one of the simplest ways to reach them.

9. Karaköy Tram Station

Karaköy Tram Station is located in the center of a historic square, at the meeting point of the Old City and the northern shore of the Golden Horn. Throughout the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, Karaköy functioned as the main port district of the city, which explains its long-standing cosmopolitan character that is still visible today.

Much of Karaköy was rebuilt in the 19th century, and the district is known for its Baroque and Neoclassical architecture. Unlike the tightly packed fabric of the Old City, Karaköy features a more European urban layout, reflecting the westernization process of the late Ottoman Empire. Walking through the area offers a clear architectural contrast to neighborhoods such as Sultanahmet or Beyazıt.

The side streets of Karaköy are filled with well-known dessert shops, cafés, and local restaurants, making the district a popular stop for short breaks or meals. From Karaköy, it is also easy to walk uphill to Galata Tower and continue toward İstiklal Street, one of the city’s busiest pedestrian zones. Travelers who want a guided route through this area often prefer to join a walking tour covering Galata, Karaköy, and İstiklal Street, especially on their first visit when the neighborhood’s history and layout are harder to grasp alone.

In recent years, Karaköy has also become the gateway to Galataport, Istanbul’s modern cruise port and waterfront complex. This development has further strengthened Karaköy’s role as a bridge between the city’s maritime past and its contemporary urban life.

Tophane Tram Station is located next to the elegant Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque, a 16th-century Ottoman mosque designed by Mimar Sinan. From the station, visitors can easily walk to Istanbul Modern and the nearby Galataport, making Tophane a convenient stop for both culture and waterfront walks.

Tophane sits at the southern edge of Beyoğlu, one of Istanbul’s most vibrant districts. From here, it is possible to walk uphill to Cihangir, a neighborhood known for its relaxed atmosphere, antique shops, and cafés popular with locals. Cihangir is also home to the Museum of Innocence, inspired by the novel of Nobel Prize–winning author Orhan Pamuk.

For food lovers, Tophane Tram Station offers several notable options nearby. Right next to the tram stop, visitors can also find the historic Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı, widely regarded as one of the finest Turkish baths in the city.

Fındıklı Tram Station is located within walking distance of both Istanbul Modern and Galataport, making it a practical stop for visitors interested in contemporary art and the Bosphorus waterfront. Nearby, the Nusretiye Mosque stands out as an elegant Ottoman structure, notable for its Baroque-influenced architecture, which reflects the stylistic transition of the 19th century.

Right next to the tram station is Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, one of Istanbul’s most respected institutions for fine arts and architecture.
Kabataş Tram Station is one of the most strategic endpoints of the T1 Tram line, offering direct access to both historic landmarks and Bosphorus transportation.
Kabataş also functions as a major ferry hub. From the nearby piers, travelers can cross to the Asian Side, join Bosphorus cruise tours, or take ferries to the Princes’ Islands, making this stop especially convenient for day trips and scenic journeys.

Located at the intersection of Beyoğlu and Beşiktaş, Kabataş is surrounded by some of the city’s most prestigious hotels. The area around Kabataş also serves as a starting point for Bosphorus-side walks toward Beşiktaş, offering a pleasant route along the waterfront after a day of sightseeing.

Visitors who plan to use the tram only once can purchase a single-use token from the ticket machines (known locally as Jetonmatik) located near each tram stop. While this option is straightforward, it is also more expensive and not practical for travelers who intend to use public transportation more than once.

For most visitors, the most convenient and economical option is to use an Istanbulkart. This is a rechargeable contactless transport card that works across all public transportation in Istanbul, including trams, metros, ferries, buses, and funiculars. The card can be purchased easily from kiosks and vending machines near tram stations and topped up whenever needed.

Using an Istanbulkart not only simplifies travel but also offers lower fares, especially when making transfers between different transport modes. For anyone spending more than a day in the city, it is the smartest and most efficient way to move around Istanbul without repeatedly buying tickets.

Conclusion

In short, the T1 Tram line is the most practical and widely used transport option for visitors in Istanbul. It allows you to move easily between the city’s key historic areas—from Sultanahmet to Kabataş—and reach many of the landmarks shown on the Istanbul Tourist Map, all while avoiding the city’s unpredictable traffic.

For travelers who want a broader overview of Istanbul’s transport system, having access to up-to-date public transport maps can make a real difference. Our detailed Istanbul Metro Map guide complements the T1 Tram perfectly, covering metro, tram, ferry, and Metrobus lines in one place and helping you plan your routes with confidence.

Used together, these resources make navigating Istanbul simpler, faster, and far less stressful, allowing you to focus on exploring the city rather than figuring out how to get around.

As of April 2026, Istanbul’s public transportation network is one of the largest urban systems in Europe, connecting two continents through an integrated mix of metro, tram, Marmaray, Metrobus, ferries, funiculars, and buses. In practical terms, most districts visitors actually use — including Sultanahmet, Taksim, Galata, Kadıköy, Üsküdar, and both airports — are directly served by this network.

This page is designed to make that system easier to understand. Below, you will find downloadable and high-resolution maps for the metro, tram, Marmaray, Metrobus, and ferry networks, each presented in its own section. If you already know which system you need, simply scroll down to the relevant map and use it directly.

To use almost all of these transportation systems, you will need one essential tool: Istanbulkart. This reloadable transit card works across metros, trams, ferries, Metrobus, and buses, and it is required by almost every visitor from the first day of their trip. If you are visiting for the first time, I have explained everything in detail in my Istanbulkart: Where to Buy and How to Use guide.

This guide reflects more than 20 years of daily experience using Istanbul’s transport system as a licensed Istanbul tour guide, both personally and while leading travelers across the city. In the rest of this guide, each transportation system is explained separately, with its own map and a short practical overview based on real visitor needs.

Public Transportation in Istanbul (2026 Overview)

Istanbul’s public transportation system is built around several interconnected networks that operate together as a single, city-wide system. Metro lines, trams, Marmaray trains, Metrobus routes, and city ferries are all designed to complement one another rather than function independently.

The overview map above brings all of these systems together in one place. At first glance, it may look dense — Istanbul is a large city with multiple transport layers — but this map is best used as a big-picture reference. It helps you understand how the city is structured and how different transport modes connect across both the European and Asian sides.

In the sections below, the network is broken down into clear, individual components. Each transport system is explained separately, with dedicated, high-resolution PDF maps, so you can focus only on the lines that are relevant to your trip.

You can view and download the Istanbul Metro Map in PDF format free of charge using the dark blue button below.
The map is officially prepared by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and is suitable for both online viewing and printing.

This high-resolution Istanbul metro map focuses on the main metro lines that are most useful for visitors traveling around the city. Below, you will find a short overview of the metro lines that tourists use most frequently in Istanbul.

Among these, M2, M4, and M11 are the most popular lines, as they provide direct access to key areas such as the historic city center, Taksim, and Istanbul Airport.

M2 Yenikapı – Hacıosman Metro Line

The M2 Yenikapı – Hacıosman Metro Line is the most frequently used metro line in Istanbul. Starting from Yenikapı (Historical Peninsula of Istanbul), one of the city’s main transportation hubs, it provides direct access to major business and lifestyle areas such as Taksim, Levent, and Maslak.

The M2 line is also the most popular metro line among both local residents and foreign visitors, as some of Istanbul’s best-known shopping malls—such as Cevahir, Kanyon, and İstinyePark—are located along this route.

In addition, through its Yenikapı and Vezneciler stations, the M2 line serves the extensive hotel districts of Aksaray, Laleli, and Beyazıt, which are especially popular with families due to their larger hotels and central location. From these areas, the line continues north and provides a direct connection to Gayrettepe, the main transfer point for the Istanbul Airport metro line (M11).

M4 Kadıköy – Sabiha Gökçen Airport Line

The M4 metro line runs on the Asian side of Istanbul, starting from Kadıköy and extending all the way to Sabiha Gökçen Airport. It is the most practical rail connection for travelers heading to or from the airport on the Asian side.

Visitors coming from the European side can reach the M4 line via Marmaray. If you are staying around Beyazıt or Laleli, you can board Marmaray from Yenikapı Station. Those staying in Sultanahmet, Sirkeci, or Eminönü can use Sirkeci Station instead. In both cases, Marmaray crosses to the Asian side and stops at Ayrılık Çeşmesi Station, where a direct and easy transfer to the M4 metro is available.

Once on the M4 line, you can travel not only to Sabiha Gökçen Airport, but also to several of the Asian side’s major shopping centers, including Akasya, Optimum, Palladium, Piazza, and Neomarin. This makes the M4 line useful not just for airport transfers, but also for shopping and everyday travel on the Asian side of the city.

M11 Gayrettepe – Istanbul Airport Line

The M11 Gayrettepe – Istanbul Airport line, completed in 2024, now offers a direct metro connection from the new airport to the city center. You can see that the M11, marked in purple on the above metro map of Istanbul, extends towards the north of the city.

 Insider’s Note:
Most Istanbul metro lines operate between 06:00 and 00:00, but on
Friday and Saturday nights, selected lines such as parts of
M2 and M7 continue with overnight service.
This can be especially useful for visitors returning late from
Taksim or Beyoğlu to districts such as
 Şişli, Mecidiyeköy, or Levent.
Trams and funiculars do not usually run through the night, so it is wise to check
the final connection if your route depends on them.

Below, you will find brief and practical descriptions of the main lines displayed on this tram map, with a focus on routes commonly used by tourists.

T1 Kabataş – Bağcılar Tram Line

The T1 Kabataş – Bağcılar Tram Line runs from Bağcılar, one of Istanbul’s busiest residential areas, to Kabataş on the Bosphorus waterfront.
While the eastern part of the line mainly serves local commuters, the most important stops for visitors are located closer to Kabataş, passing through key historic areas such as Sultanahmet, Eminönü, and the Grand Bazaar area.

T5 Eminönü – Alibeyköy Tram Line

The T5 Eminönü – Alibeyköy Tram Line is a convenient option for travelers heading from the Old City toward districts like Fener and Balat, Ayvansaray, and Eyüp.
The line starts from a tram stop located very close to the Spice Bazaar, making it easy to combine sightseeing with local transport.

Using this line, you can explore Fener and Balat’s colorful streets, visit Ayvansaray to see the Byzantine city walls, Chora Church, and Tekfur Palace, and continue to Eyüp to reach Pierre Loti Hill.

F1 Taksim – Kabataş Funicular Line

The F1 Taksim – Kabataş Funicular Line is not technically a tram line, but it is shown on the tram map for a practical reason.
The T1 Tram Line, which runs from Sultanahmet to Kabataş, connects directly to Taksim Square via the F1 funicular.

Since Sultanahmet and Taksim Square are the two most important areas for visitors, the easiest way to travel between them is to take the T1 tram to Kabataş and then transfer to the F1 funicular up to Taksim.

The T1 tram is also the most useful transport line for sightseeing in the Old City. Its Sultanahmet stop leaves visitors within a short walk of Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, and Topkapi Palace, three of Istanbul’s most visited historic monuments. Visitors who plan to see all three on the same day often prefer to reserve a combo ticket covering all three in advance, especially in spring and summer when ticket lines tend to be longer.

As the map makes clear, Marmaray follows the Marmara coast and passes under the Bosphorus, linking the Asian and European sides through a single rail tunnel.

The Marmaray line starts from Gebze, on the eastern edge of the metropolitan area, and continues westward along the coast before ending at Halkalı. It is a modern rail system built on the city’s historic railway corridor, which is why Marmaray has a relatively large number of stations.

For visitors, the most useful Marmaray stations are located between Ayrılık Çeşmesi (Kadıköy) and Yenikapı, where the line connects with Istanbul’s central transport network.

In the past, ferries were the most reliable way to travel between the Asian and European sides of the city, as crossing the Bosphorus by bus could take an unpredictable amount of time. With the introduction of Metrobus and Marmaray, cross-continental travel in Istanbul has become much faster and more efficient.

Today, Marmaray allows you to travel from Sirkeci (Old City) to Üsküdar in just 4 minutes, or to Kadıköy in about 8 minutes, making it one of the fastest transport options in the city.

Most visitors stay around Sultanahmet or Taksim.
For travelers based in Sultanahmet, the closest Marmaray station is Sirkeci. Those staying in Taksim can take the M2 Metro to Yenikapı, transfer to Marmaray, and continue easily to the Asian Side of Istanbul.

 Insider’s Note:
When traveling between the European and Asian sides on
Marmaray or Metrobus, remember to tap your
Istanbulkart both on entry and on exit.
A higher initial fare is charged first, and the unused portion is automatically returned
when you tap out at your destination.
If you forget the second tap, that balance adjustment cannot be processed.
This does not apply to regular metro, tram, or ferry rides, where a single tap on entry
 is normally sufficient.

On the Istanbul Metrobus Map, the Metrobus route is highlighted with a light brown line.
You can view and download this map free of charge in PDF format using the dark blue button below. As illustrated above, the Metrobus operates on a dedicated corridor that crosses between the European and Asian sides without being affected by regular road traffic.

The Metrobus line starts from Söğütlüçeşme on the Asian Side, crosses the Bosphorus bridge, and continues westward to Beylikdüzü, one of the outermost districts on the European Side.

While Beylikdüzü itself is not a touristic area, it is home to some of Istanbul’s largest exhibition and fair centers. For this reason, Metrobus can be useful for visitors attending international tourism, food, or book fairs held in this district.

One of the most important advantages of Metrobus is that it provides fast and direct access to the Asian Side from central areas such as Mecidiyeköy and Zincirlikuyu, without the need to pass through Beşiktaş or Taksim.

Many visitors stay in districts like Mecidiyeköy, Şişli, Levent, or Maslak, where there is a wide range of hotels. From these areas, Metrobus offers a much quicker alternative for reaching Kadıköy compared to traditional routes.

The main drawback of Metrobus is crowding during rush hours. It can be very difficult to use between 08:00–10:00 in the morning and 18:00–20:00 in the evening. Outside of these peak hours, however, Metrobus can be a highly efficient and time-saving option for crossing between the two sides of the city.

 Insider’s Note:
If you plan to use Metrobus during weekday rush hours
 (roughly 08:00–10:00 and 18:00–20:00),
expect heavy crowds at major stations such as Mecidiyeköy,
 Zincirlikuyu, and Şirinevler.
Travelers with luggage may find boarding uncomfortable at these times.
For airport transfers, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is often the easier option
 during peak hours.

For travelers arriving at Istanbul Airport (IST) with luggage, Metrobus is usually not the easiest transfer option, since it requires additional connections and can become very crowded at peak hours. A much simpler alternative for travelers with luggage is to pre-book a private airport transfer, especially if you are heading directly to Sultanahmet or Taksim. This can be particularly helpful for late-night arrivals, when public transport connections become more limited.

The Istanbul Ferry Map highlights many of the city’s most historic and touristic waterfront areas.
You can view and download this map free of charge in PDF format using the dark blue button below. The map above shows ferry routes connecting key districts along the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus, and both sides of Istanbul.

Since it can be difficult to identify ferry piers only by neighborhood names, the map uses numbered markers. Below is a clear explanation of each numbered ferry route, showing where each ferry departs from and where it goes.

Numbered Ferry Routes on the Map

1) Turyol Bosphorus Cruise
Bosphorus sightseeing cruises operated by Turyol, departing mainly from Eminönü and Karaköy.

2) Şehir Hatları Bosphorus Cruise
Official Bosphorus cruise routes operated by Şehir Hatları, with departures from Eminönü and nearby piers.

3) Eminönü → Kadıköy / Üsküdar
Regular ferry services from Eminönü to the Asian Side, stopping at Kadıköy and Üsküdar.

4) Karaköy → Kadıköy
Direct ferry connection between Karaköy (European Side) and Kadıköy (Asian Side).

5) Dentur Bosphorus Cruise
Bosphorus sightseeing cruises operated by Dentur, departing from central waterfront piers.

6) Beşiktaş → Kadıköy / Üsküdar
Regular ferry services from Beşiktaş to both Kadıköy and Üsküdar on the Asian Side.

7) Üsküdar → Eminönü
Return ferry route from Üsküdar to Eminönü, commonly used by commuters and visitors.

8) Kadıköy → Eminönü
Direct ferry connection from Kadıköy back to Eminönü on the European Side.

It is important to note that ferries departing from Eminönü and Beşiktaş usually serve both Kadıköy and Üsküdar. Since these two districts are located very close to each other, they are grouped together on the map rather than being numbered separately.

While many ferries from Eminönü and Beşiktaş are primarily commuter routes used by locals, some operators also offer Bosphorus cruises designed for sightseeing. These usually follow a longer route along both shorelines, with views of waterfront palaces, historic neighborhoods, and the bridges. If that experience interests you, you can reserve a Bosphorus cruise with a stop on the Asian side, or read my guide to Bosphorus cruise tours in Istanbul for a fuller overview.

How Istanbul’s Transit Network Has Expanded

Istanbul’s public transport network has grown significantly over the past decade. The map below shows the system as it stood before the most recent extensions. At the time, the M4 metro line ended at Tavşantepe and did not yet continue to Sabiha Gökçen Airport on the Asian side. The M11 line connecting Gayrettepe to Istanbul Airport had not yet opened.

These extensions, together with newer Marmaray connections, have made both international airports and large parts of the Asian side directly reachable through the rail network, without taxi or bus transfers. Looking at the earlier version of the map alongside the current one makes it easier to see how quickly the city’s rail system has developed, and how much of today’s visitor-friendly access is the result of recent additions rather than long-standing infrastructure.

Conclusion

I hope this guide to Istanbul’s metro, tram, Marmaray, Metrobus, and ferry maps has given you the clarity you need to move around the city with confidence. Each of these systems plays a distinct role in Istanbul’s daily life, and understanding how they fit together is one of the most practical skills a visitor can gain.

That said, transportation maps are designed to show routes, not relevance. On most public transport maps, every neighborhood appears the same — reduced to small dots and line intersections — whether it holds world-famous landmarks or places of little interest to visitors. Knowing where a line goes is useful; knowing where it’s worth getting off is what truly shapes a good trip.

If you’d like to see Istanbul through a more visitor-focused lens, I recommend taking a look at my Istanbul Tourist Attraction Maps guide. That article highlights historic districts, major landmarks, and sightseeing zones, helping you connect transportation routes with the places that actually define the city. Used together, these guides allow you to plan your days not just efficiently, but meaningfully — turning movement across Istanbul into a well-paced and rewarding journey.
