Istanbul is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Having a history of 2700 years, Istanbul carries the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman heritage. One of the most frequently asked questions by those who want to visit the city is when is the best time to visit Istanbul. We will try to find the answer to this question in this article.

I have been a private tour guide in Istanbul for about 15 years. For this reason, I have the chance to observe what tourists visiting Istanbul are pleased with. In this way, I can answer many questions about Istanbul based on my experience.

First of all, I should point out that the best time to visit Istanbul is a very subjective matter. As an insider, I can say that there is no definitive answer to this. However, I can help you make your decision by sharing what you can do in Istanbul in which season.

Of course, the most decisive things will be the weather and activities in Istanbul. In some seasons, the weather is nice and there are many festivals in the city. On the other hand, it should be added that the city is very crowded when the weather is nice and all activities can be done. Of course, hotels and flights are also expensive on these dates.

For this reason, the tourist season is not the right time for those who do not like crowds or who are looking for a budget holiday. So what is the best time for you to visit Istanbul? Let’s talk about the pros and cons of all this now.

Best Time to Visit Istanbul in 2024

We will examine the best time to visit Istanbul in 2024 under 4 headings. Spring, summer, autumn and winter periods have their own pros and cons. I will share with you all I know about this.

I hope that the information I will share in this blog post will give you practical information about your visit to Istanbul. Let’s start by hoping these insider tips will be useful to you.

1. Spring

If you visit Istanbul in the spring, you will encounter a weather that inspires travelers. In the spring, Judas trees bloom in Istanbul and all the hills turn purple.

Purple, a royal color in the Roman and Byzantine periods, adds a beauty to the city that cannot be seen in any other season. In this way, you can take great pictures when you go on a Bosphorus cruise.

In addition, there is a Tulip festival in Istanbul during the 1-month period covering the end of March and the beginning of April. In this way, various concerts and events take place. Tulip (Lale) has been one of the symbols of Istanbul since the 1600s. Gardens of all museums and parks will be colorful for a month thanks to tulips.

How is the Weather in Istanbul in Spring?

Winters are very cold in Istanbul. Like March and April, the weather begins to warm slowly, but is still cool. For this reason, I recommend that you wear a jacket.

Also, some days in March, April and May are rainy. For this reason, do not forget to bring your raincoat while preparing your luggage.

After the beginning of June, the air temperature in Istanbul will rise above 20 degrees and you can wear t-shirts. However, the sweltering heat of July and August would not have started yet. For this reason, June is one of the best times to visit Istanbul.

Is Spring the Best Time to Visit Istanbul?

If you want to explore Istanbul when the weather is mild and the flowers are blooming, yes, spring is the best time to visit Istanbul. However, be prepared to meet the crowds, as many people will prefer this season to come to Istanbul.

Istanbul’s tourist season starts at the end of March and hotel prices are at their highest during April, May and June. In July and August, the crowd moves to the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. Because the temperature in Istanbul rises above 30 degrees and humidity is uncomfortable.

The most popular tourism season in Istanbul along with spring is autumn. With the temperature decreasing after the end of August, tourists will return to Istanbul again. It will remain crowded until the winter cold starts in the end of November.

2. Summer

June is the best month for those who will visit Istanbul in the summer. Because there is no heat and high humidity that make walking tours difficult.

There is high humidity in July and August. It is difficult to stay indoors without air conditioning, and the sun is uncomfortable outdoors.

Many Istanbulites have summer houses on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. When the heat of July and August begins, they go on holiday to Assos, Ayvalik, Bodrum, Fethiye and Marmaris.

Since the tourist season that started in the spring will be still going on, the hotel prices will be equally expensive. However, you cannot spend as much quality time as in spring and autumn due to hot weather.

For this reason, July and August are not the ideal time to visit Istanbul, when the temperature is at its highest. During this period, you may consider going to Bodrum, Oludeniz, Marmaris or Antalya on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. These places are among the best holiday destinations in Turkey.

3. Autumn

Autumn is a good time to visit Istanbul. The weather is suitable for walking, just like in the spring, and there is a lot of activity in the city. In autumn, many international fairs, concerts and festivals take place in Istanbul.

In September, Istanbulites return to the city from their summer homes. The opening of the schools creates excitement among the locals and the shopping activity increases in the city. Autumn is the best time to visit Istanbul for shopping as it is when there are the most alternatives.

The weather in September and October is perfect for tourism activities. From the beginning of November, the weather starts to cool. But it doesn’t get too cold until December.

Is Autumn the Best Time to Visit Istanbul?

If you find autumn nostalgic and romantic, yes, autumn is the best time to visit Istanbul. Autumn, like spring, is Istanbul’s tourist season and is the perfect time to visit the city.

The 3-month period from the beginning of September to the end of November is the golden season of Istanbul tourism. Autumn is the right time to take part in cultural tours and shop in Istanbul.

4. Winter

In winter, the air temperature in Istanbul varies between 1 and 12 degrees. However, some winters are mild. It snows in Istanbul a few times a year at most and the snow does not stay on the ground for more than a few days.

Winter months are the right time for some types of tourists to visit Istanbul. For example, if you don’t like crowds and don’t want to wait in line at museum entrances, winter is the right time for you.

Since the hotels and restaurants in Istanbul cannot do much in the winter, they welcome you with open arms. Hotel prices are the lowest and they are all open in winter.

Most of the hotels and restaurants are closed on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts when the tourism season ends. However, all restaurants, hotels and shops in Istanbul remain open in winter. This allows you to do all you want much cheaper.

Conclusion

As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, the best time to visit Istanbul is up to you. In the spring, flowers and good weather will help you maintain a good mood. In autumn, the weather is a bit gloomy, but very romantic. Spring and autumn are also the best times to go on a Bosphorus tour as in the picture above.

The least suitable times to visit Istanbul are summer and winter. However, you can cool off by going to the beaches near Istanbul in summer. In winter, you can still visit Istanbul with pleasure by spending more time indoors.

If you liked this article, you may also want to read the article called weather in Istanbul all year round. The information in these two articles is complementary to each other.

Istanbul offers several different museum and city passes, and choosing the right one can be confusing for first-time visitors. The official Museum Pass Istanbul is often the first option travelers encounter, but it is not the only pass available in the city. Over the years, alternative products such as Tourist Passes, E-Passes, and bundled city cards have also entered the market, each offering different coverage, pricing models, and conditions.

This guide provides a clear and up-to-date overview of Museum Pass Istanbul alongside other popular city pass alternatives available in 2026. You’ll find what each pass includes, which major sights are covered or excluded, and the key differences that matter most to foreign visitors. Where relevant, official sources and purchase options are linked for easy reference.

Some passes focus strictly on state-run museums, while others combine museum entries with guided tours, attractions, or time-based access. The value of each option depends heavily on your travel style, length of stay, and sightseeing priorities — and the same pass that suits one visitor may be the wrong choice for another. For visitors planning their itinerary around specific landmarks, our individual guides on Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Basilica Cistern, Dolmabahçe Palace, and Galata Tower also note which passes apply at each site.

This guide reflects more than 20 years of experience working in Istanbul as a licensed Istanbul tour guide, including regular contact with foreign visitors who use these passes during their trips. All information reflects current conditions as of April 2026. Since prices, inclusions, and terms can change, this comparison is designed to help you make an informed decision — not to sell you a pass you may not actually need.

Istanbul Museum Pass & City Cards 2026

In this guide, I focus on the Museum Pass Istanbul and the main alternative city passes currently available to foreign visitors. Over the years, several different pass systems have appeared in Istanbul, each offering a different combination of museums, attractions, time limits, and pricing models. As a result, many visitors are unsure which option actually makes sense for their trip.

Rather than promoting a single product, this article explains what each pass includes, who it is best suited for, and where its limitations begin. The official Museum Pass Istanbul remains the reference point, but alternative options such as the Istanbul Tourist Pass, E-Pass, and MegaPass are also examined to give you a clear comparison.

The sections below are organized by pass type. Since the Museum Pass Istanbul is the most widely used and often misunderstood, it is covered in greater detail, including a closer look at whether it is truly worth buying depending on your travel style and itinerary.

All information reflects current conditions as of April 2026. Prices and inclusions may change, so this guide is designed to help you understand the structure and logic behind each pass — and make your own informed decision.

🏛️ Main attractions: Topkapi Palace (Harem & Hagia Irene included), Istanbul Archaeological Museums, Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum, Galata Tower

❌ Not included: Basilica Cistern, Dolmabahce Palace, Beylerbeyi Palace, Hagia Sophia

📱 Format: Physical card or digital QR code (if purchased online)

⏳ Validity: 5 consecutive days (120 hours) from first use

💶 Price: Approx. €105 (sold in Euros; subject to change)

⚠️ Important: The pass helps you bypass ticket office queues, but security checks still apply. Children under 8 enter state museums free, but a free child ticket may still need to be collected at the ticket office.

The Istanbul Museum Pass is the official museum card issued by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism for foreign visitors. It is designed primarily for travelers who plan to visit several state-run museums within a short period of time and prefer to avoid buying individual tickets at each entrance.

From a practical point of view, the pass is most useful if you intend to visit four or more major museums, especially large complexes such as Topkapi Palace, where the pass also covers the Harem and Hagia Irene sections. Even for visitors who are less price-focused, the ability to skip ticket queues at busy sites can make a noticeable difference to the flow of a sightseeing day.

Is the Museum Pass Worth It?

Whether the Museum Pass is worth buying depends entirely on your itinerary. If your plans focus on Ottoman palaces, archaeological collections, and state museums, the card usually pays for itself. If, on the other hand, your visit centers on private museums or attractions outside the Ministry’s system, the pass may offer limited value.

It is also important to note that while the Museum Pass allows you to bypass ticket offices, it does not exempt you from security checks. At popular sites, security screening can still involve waiting, especially during peak season.

Price, Validity & Basic Use (2026)

As of 2026, the Istanbul Museum Pass is sold in Euros and costs approximately €105 (subject to change). Once activated at the first museum entrance, the pass is valid for 5 consecutive days (120 hours).

The pass can be used either as a physical card or in digital form via QR code if purchased online. Entry is made by scanning the card or code at museum turnstiles.

Children under 8 years old are entitled to free admission to state museums, but a free child ticket must still be obtained at the ticket office by showing proof of age. In practice, this requirement can reduce the time-saving advantage of the Museum Pass for families during busy periods.

Museums Included

The Istanbul Museum Pass covers the following major state museums in the city:

Topkapi Palace (including Harem and Hagia Irene)

Istanbul Archaeological Museums

Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum

Great Palace Mosaic Museum

Galata Tower

Rumeli Hisarı Fortress

Galata Mevlevi House Museum

History of Islamic Science and Technology Museum

Adam Mickiewicz Museum

Museums Not Included

The pass is not valid at several of Istanbul’s most visited attractions, as these are operated by different institutions. Notable exclusions include:

Basilica Cistern

Dolmabahce Palace

Beylerbeyi Palace

Hagia Sophia

This limitation is the main reason why some visitors prefer alternative city passes that combine museums with private attractions.

Where to Buy & Practical Notes

The Museum Pass can be purchased at the ticket offices of major included museums or through the official website of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. If buying a physical card, less crowded museums — such as the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum — are usually more convenient than Topkapi Palace.

A final detail worth knowing concerns Galata Tower: under the “Night Museology” program, the tower closes briefly in the early evening and reopens for night visits. The Museum Pass is not valid after 19:00, and a separate ticket is required for night entry.

The Istanbul Tourist Pass is a privately operated city pass that combines museum access with guided tours and curated experiences across the city. Unlike the official Museum Pass Istanbul, this product focuses on bundled attractions and time-based experiences rather than unlimited entry to state-run museums.

The pass is purchased online and delivered in digital format as a QR-coded voucher. Depending on the package selected, it is valid for a fixed number of days — typically between 1 and 10 consecutive days — starting from first use.

One of the main advantages of the Istanbul Tourist Pass is that it includes guided entry or skip-the-ticket-line access at some of Istanbul’s most popular landmarks, such as Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and the Basilica Cistern. However, the format of entry varies by attraction. Some visits are organized as scheduled group tours with a licensed guide, while others allow self-guided access, often supported by an audio guide.

Beyond museums, the pass also covers a range of additional experiences, including a Bosphorus cruise, thematic walking tours, and selected cultural activities. For visitors who prefer a structured sightseeing plan and want to combine major highlights with guided explanations, this pass can be a practical option.

Before purchasing, it is important to review the official details carefully. Advance reservations may be required for guided entries, and security checks at major sites still apply, even when ticket office queues are skipped.

 Insider’s Note:
For travelers looking for a broad, all-in-one experience,
Istanbul Tourist Pass is often the most reliable private option.
It has been on the market for over a decade and operates with
one of the widest service networks among city passes in Istanbul,
which helps reduce operational friction during a short visit.
This is not the best choice for everyone, but for visitors who value
convenience and variety over a strictly museum-focused itinerary,
it is usually the safest pick.

⏳ Validity: 1, 2, 3, 5, or 7 consecutive days

💶 Price: Starting from €125 (1-day pass; promotions may apply)

⚠️ Important: Public transport rides are not guaranteed; guided or hosted entry may apply and advance reservations can be required for some attractions

The Istanbul E-Pass is a fully digital sightseeing pass designed for visitors who want to see many of Istanbul’s major attractions in a limited time. Unlike the official Museum Pass Istanbul, this product combines museum entries with tours, activities, and optional experiences under a single QR-code system.

After purchasing the pass online, you receive a digital QR code that becomes active with your first use. Depending on the duration selected — 1, 2, 3, 5, or 7 consecutive days — the pass allows entry to a wide selection of popular sites, including Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern, along with various tours and experiences.

Entry conditions vary by attraction. Some visits offer skip-the-ticket-line access, while others operate with hosted or guided entry. Whether an attraction is self-guided or guided depends on the site itself and should always be checked in advance, especially during peak season.

In addition to historical landmarks, the Istanbul E-Pass may include experiences such as a Bosphorus cruise, walking tours in neighborhoods like Fener and Balat, aquarium visits, day trips to the Princes’ Islands, and hop-on hop-off bus tours. This structure generally appeals to travelers who prefer a packed sightseeing plan rather than selective museum visits.

Before purchasing, it is important to review the list of included attractions carefully. The pass does not guarantee public transport rides, and not all attractions are automatically included in every package. In some cases, advance reservations, guided time slots, or additional tickets (for example, specific sections within large complexes) may apply.

🏛️ Main attractions: Topkapi Palace (the Harem is often included in higher-tier packages), Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern

🧭 Included extras: Bosphorus cruise and selected bundled experiences (content varies by package)

📱 Format: Fully digital pass (mobile tickets delivered after purchase)

⏳ Validity: Typically 7 consecutive days from activation

💶 Price: Starting from €79 (Essential Package; higher tiers vary)

⚠️ Important: “Skip-the-ticket-line” typically helps at the ticket counter, but security checks still apply at major sites; a physical transport card may require pick-up or hotel delivery

The Istanbul MegaPass is a privately operated city pass designed for visitors who want a compact, pre-planned sightseeing package rather than a museum-only card. Unlike the official Museum Pass Istanbul, MegaPass is purchased entirely online and used in a fully digital format.

As of April 2026, the pass typically works with a 7-day validity window, during which you activate and use the attractions included in your selected package. Instead of unlimited museum entry, MegaPass follows a bundle-based system: a core set of standard experiences combined with a limited number of major attractions selected in advance.

Depending on the package level, MegaPass commonly includes access to key highlights such as Topkapi Palace (with the Harem often included in higher-tier packages), Hagia Sophia, and the Basilica Cistern, along with a Bosphorus cruise. Some visits are offered as guided or hosted entries, while others are self-guided. The exact entry format varies by attraction and should always be reviewed before purchase.

One practical element of MegaPass is its inclusion of an Istanbulkart, Istanbul’s public transportation card, usually preloaded with a limited number of rides. This component may require physical pick-up (for example, hotel delivery or collection from a central meeting point in areas such as Sultanahmet), so it is worth checking the logistics if you plan to rely on public transport from day one.

MegaPass often promotes “skip-the-ticket-line” access. In practice, this usually helps you avoid the ticket counter, but security checks still apply at major sites. During peak hours — especially around Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque area — security queues are unavoidable regardless of the pass used.

Overall, Istanbul MegaPass is best suited for travelers who want a short, structured itinerary focused on major landmarks and a small number of bundled extras, rather than maximum museum flexibility. Before buying, always confirm which attractions are included in your specific package, how entry is handled (guided vs. self-guided), and whether any reservations or physical pick-ups are required.

The Istanbul Welcome Card is a privately operated sightseeing pass that focuses on convenience and bundled services, rather than unlimited museum access. One of its distinguishing features is the option for physical delivery to your hotel before arrival, allowing visitors to start sightseeing without visiting ticket offices or sales points.

Depending on the version selected — such as Classic, Premium, or Deluxe — the card may include guided or skip-the-ticket-line entry to major landmarks like Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern. Entry conditions vary by site: some attractions require a guided visit with a fixed meeting point, while others allow independent entry. These details differ by version and should be checked carefully at the time of purchase.

Certain packages also include additional services, such as a Bosphorus cruise and a limited public transportation component (usually a fixed number of rides). A digital city guide and map are typically provided by email, complementing the physical or digital card. In some higher-tier versions, the package may also include the official Museum Pass Istanbul as part of the bundled offering.

This type of pass can be suitable for visitors staying several days in Istanbul who prefer an all-in-one solution that combines sightseeing, transport, and pre-arranged access. However, since inclusions, delivery methods, and sales channels may change over time, it is important to confirm exactly what is covered and how the card is activated before buying.

Istanbul offers more sightseeing passes than ever before — and that abundance can be both an advantage and a source of confusion. Each pass serves a different travel style, pace, and expectation. There is no single “best” option for everyone; the right choice depends on how deeply you want to explore, how much structure you prefer, and how much time you have in the city.

The Museum Pass Istanbul, issued by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, remains the most straightforward and transparent option. It focuses on a curated group of state-run museums and historic sites and is designed primarily for visitors who want self-guided cultural exploration without waiting in ticket lines. Its scope is intentionally limited — but within that scope, it does its job very well.

Private city passes take a broader approach. The Istanbul Tourist Pass is one of the most comprehensive options, combining major landmarks with guided tours, cruises, and dozens of additional experiences. It appeals to visitors who want a full itinerary built into a single product, though its value depends heavily on how actively you use it and whether its guided formats align with your travel rhythm.

The Istanbul E-Pass stands out for its fully digital structure and flexibility. With multiple duration options and a wide range of attractions, it can be an efficient solution for travelers who plan to visit many highlights in a short time — especially those comfortable managing QR entries, reservations, and varying access formats.

The Istanbul MegaPass sits somewhere in between: a compact, pre-selected bundle designed for visitors who want a clear, limited set of iconic experiences rather than unlimited access. It can work well for shorter stays, provided you carefully review what is included and how each attraction is accessed.

Finally, the Istanbul Welcome Card is best understood as a convenience-oriented package. With hotel delivery options, transport credits, and bundled services, it targets visitors who prefer an all-in-one solution — but its content and value vary significantly by version, so reading the fine print is essential.

As a licensed local guide who works in Istanbul year-round, I review these passes with one principle in mind: clarity over marketing. Prices, inclusions, and conditions can change, and some attractions may still require security queues, guided slots, or advance reservations — regardless of which pass you use.

My advice is simple:
Start with your itinerary, not the pass.
Choose the card that supports your way of discovering Istanbul — not the one that promises the longest list.

As of April 2026, Istanbulkart remains the standard payment method for using Istanbul’s public transportation network. It is accepted across metros, trams, ferries, Metrobus, funiculars, and buses, and is the primary way both residents and visitors access the city’s transit system.

Today, travelers can choose between the classic physical Istanbulkart, the Istanbulkart Mobile app with QR-code payment, or contactless credit and debit cards accepted at many stations and turnstiles. This guide explains each option in detail, along with where to buy Istanbulkart, how to top up credit, transfer discounts, and refund rules.

Istanbulkart is a reloadable contactless transit card that lowers per-ride costs and allows discounted transfers between many connected lines. For the wider network structure and station planning, see my Istanbul Public Transportation Map and Istanbul T1 Tram Map guides.

This guide reflects more than 20 years of daily experience using Istanbul’s public transportation as a licensed Istanbul tour guide, both personally and while leading travelers across the city. In the rest of this guide, buying options, top-up methods, transfer discounts, and refunds are covered separately with practical detail.

The card prices, fare structure, vending machine locations, and payment methods described in this guide were reviewed through direct use of Istanbul’s transport payment system by licensed Istanbul tour guide Serhat Engul in April 2026.

This page reflects the current system, including the standard fare, the transfer discount structure, and alternatives such as the Istanbulkart Mobile app and contactless bank card payments at turnstiles.

As fares, machine locations, and payment options may occasionally change during the year, this guide is periodically reviewed and updated.

How to Buy Istanbul Travel Card?

Buying an Istanbulkart is still the most practical way to use public transport in Istanbul, especially if you plan to travel frequently or transfer between different lines. The classic Istanbulkart can be purchased from the yellow-and-black “Biletmatik” machines located at metro, tram, ferry, and major bus stations across the city — including key areas such as Sultanahmet, Taksim, and major transport hubs.

On the machine’s main screen, simply select Istanbulkart, complete the payment, and collect your card from the slot below. As of April 2026, the price of a blank Istanbulkart is 165 Turkish Lira, which is a non-refundable card fee.

You do not need to insert the exact amount. If you pay more than the card price — for example, 200 TL — the machine will issue your card and automatically load the remaining balance as travel credit onto it. This allows you to start using public transport immediately without a separate top-up step.

That said, it’s important to know that buying a physical card is no longer the only option. Many visitors now use contactless credit or debit cards directly at turnstiles, or prefer the Istanbulkart Mobile app, which allows access via QR code on your smartphone. These alternatives can be especially convenient for short stays or late-night arrivals, while the physical Istanbulkart remains the best choice for longer visits and frequent travel.

Insider’s Note: If you arrive in Istanbul by plane, Istanbulkart vending machines are available in the arrivals hall at both Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW). This allows you to buy a card on arrival and start using public transportation directly from the airport.

For travelers arriving late at night, with heavy luggage, or staying outside the central transport hubs, public transport from the airport is not always the most comfortable option on the first day. Travelers who prefer a direct door-to-door arrival often choose to book a private airport transfer service for the journey from Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) to their hotel.

Where to Buy Istanbulkart in Sultanahmet

If you are staying in or visiting Sultanahmet, the easiest place to buy an Istanbulkart is at the yellow-and-black “Biletmatik” machines located next to Sultanahmet Tram Station (T1 line). This station sits right in the heart of the Old City and is within walking distance of Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and the Basilica Cistern.

To find the station, simply follow the tram tracks along Divanyolu Street — the main road connecting Sultanahmet to the Grand Bazaar. If Hagia Sophia is behind you, walk in the direction of the Grand Bazaar for about five minutes. Once you reach the tram stop, the ticket machines will be clearly visible near the platforms.

This location is especially convenient for first-time visitors, as it allows you to buy your card and start using trams, metros, and ferries immediately without leaving the historic area. Many visitors who buy their card here also plan to visit Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, and Topkapı Palace on the same day. Travelers who plan to see all three on the same day often prefer to book a combined skip-the-line ticket online before their visit.

Where to Buy Istanbulkart in Taksim

In Taksim, Istanbulkart can be purchased from Biletmatik machines located at several major transport points connected to Istiklal Street and the city’s metro network.

You’ll find machines at:

M2 Metro Station (Taksim Square): Located at the northeastern end of Istiklal Street, directly beneath Taksim Square

F2 Tünel Funicular Station: Situated at the southwestern end of Istiklal Street, closer to Galata Tower

T2 Nostalgic Tram stops: Running between Taksim Square and Tünel along Istiklal Street

The T2 Nostalgic Tram connects these points on the surface, while the M2 Metro and F2 Funicular provide fast underground access to other parts of the city. No matter which end of Istiklal Street you are on, you can easily reach a machine and purchase your Istanbulkart within minutes.

Insider’s Note: When using a physical Istanbulkart, you pay the standard fare of 42 TL at turnstiles. If you choose contactless credit or debit card payment instead, the charged amount is usually slightly higher due to possible bank fees or exchange rate policies applied by your card provider.

Price of Istanbul Travel Card for 2026

As of April 2026, the price of a blank Istanbulkart is 165 Turkish Lira. This amount is the card fee itself and does not include travel credit. Once you purchase the card, you can load any amount of balance onto it and use it across Istanbul’s entire public transport network.

Each standard ride — including metro, tram, bus, ferry, and funicular lines — currently costs 42 Turkish Lira per person. When using a Biletmatik machine, you do not need to insert the exact card price. For example, if you insert 300 TL, the machine will issue your Istanbulkart and automatically load the remaining 135 TL as travel credit, allowing you to start traveling immediately.

One of the main advantages of Istanbulkart is its flexibility. The card can be topped up easily at stations throughout the city, and a single card can be used for multiple passengers. This makes it especially practical for couples, families, or small groups. As long as there is enough balance on the card, you do not need to buy separate cards for each person.

Another key benefit is the transfer discount system. Istanbulkart charges the full fare on the first ride, but applies reduced fares on up to three subsequent transfers made within a two-hour time window. Each transfer becomes progressively cheaper, making Istanbulkart the most cost-effective option for travelers who combine metro, tram, bus, or ferry journeys during the same trip.

Transfer Discounts for Istanbulkart 2026

One of the most attractive features of Istanbulkart is its automatic transfer discount system, which rewards passengers who change vehicles within a short time. When you use the same card for consecutive trips, the fare becomes cheaper with each transfer, making daily travel noticeably more affordable.

As of April 25, 2026, the standard fares work as follows:

First ride: 42,00 TL

Second ride: 31,27 TL

Third ride: 24,02 TL

Fourth ride: 15,62 TL

These discounts apply when you make transfers within a two-hour window, and they are valid on the public transport lines most commonly used by visitors, including metro, tram, and city ferries. For travelers who combine different transport modes — for example, tram to metro, or metro to ferry — the savings add up quickly.

It’s important to note that not all transport lines follow the same fare structure. Cross-continental routes such as Marmaray and Metrobus, as well as some buses that travel between the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, use higher base fares. While Istanbulkart can still be used on these lines, the transfer discount amounts may differ.

How to Get Refund on Istanbulkart?

Refunds on Istanbulkart are not available for every journey. They apply mainly to long-distance transport lines such as Marmaray and Metrobus, which operate across large sections of the city and often connect the European and Asian sides of Istanbul.

On these lines, the system initially charges a maximum fare when you enter. This is because Marmaray and Metrobus operate on a distance-based pricing system, assuming you may travel all the way to the final stop. If you get off earlier, the unused portion of the fare is automatically eligible for a refund.

To receive this refund, simply look for the refund machines located near station exits. These machines are usually placed after the turnstiles, especially at busy and central stations to prevent queues. As shown in the photo above, you only need to tap your Istanbulkart on the refund device, and the unused balance will be returned to your card instantly.

It’s also important to clarify a common misunderstanding. In the past, Istanbulkart itself functioned like a refundable deposit: the card could be returned at kiosks, and the card fee was refunded before the card was reissued to another user. This system no longer exists. Today, Istanbulkart cards cannot be returned or refunded. With millions of cards in circulation, the card itself no longer has a refundable value — only unused distance-based fares on specific lines can be reclaimed.

How to Top Up Istanbulkart?

Topping up your Istanbulkart is quick and straightforward. In most metro, tram, and ferry stations across Istanbul, you’ll find the familiar yellow-and-black machines labeled “Biletmatik” — like the one shown in the photo above. These are the standard Istanbulkart top-up machines, and they handle the vast majority of card reloads in the city.

Using a Biletmatik machine usually takes less than 30 seconds. Simply place your card on the reader, select the amount you want to load, and complete the payment. These machines are designed for everyday use and are the easiest option for visitors, as they are widely available throughout the transport network.

In some very central and high-traffic stations, you may also come across new-generation blue machines, which are larger — roughly the size of an ATM. These newer machines serve the same purpose and can also be used to top up Istanbulkart, but they are still limited to certain locations. If you are unsure, the yellow-and-black Biletmatik machines remain the safest and most reliable choice.

Next to many Biletmatik machines, you may notice another device labeled “Jetonmatik.” These machines sell single-use tokens for one-time trips. While useful in emergencies, one-way tokens cost 60 TL per ride, compared with 42 TL when using an Istanbulkart, and they do not offer transfer discounts. For visitors planning more than a few rides, the 165 TL card fee is usually offset within the first day of regular travel, making Istanbulkart the more practical and economical option.

FAQ – Common Issues for Visitors Using Istanbulkart

Using Istanbulkart as a visitor in Istanbul is generally straightforward, but there are a few important differences between how the system works for locals and for short-term travelers. Most confusion happens when expectations don’t match reality — especially around discounts, refunds, and limits.

Below you’ll find clear answers to the most common questions we hear from visitors, based on real on-the-ground experience and current regulations in 2026.

Do tourists get the same discounts and refunds as locals?

No. Transfer discounts, public holiday benefits, and distance-based refunds are available only for personalized Istanbulkarts, which require a Turkish ID number or a valid residence permit.

Visitors using anonymous (tourist) Istanbulkarts are charged the standard fare on each ride. This includes:

No transfer discounts

No free rides on public holidays

No partial refunds on long-distance lines such as Marmaray or Metrobus

This distinction is one of the most misunderstood aspects of the system.

Can tourists personalize their Istanbulkart?

No. Personalization is not possible without a Turkish ID number or residence permit. Registration must be completed through the official Istanbulkart system, which verifies local identification.

If you are visiting Istanbul temporarily, you should plan to use either:

An anonymous Istanbulkart

Or contactless credit/debit cards at supported turnstiles

Is there a top-up limit for tourist cards?

Yes. Anonymous Istanbulkarts have a monthly top-up limit, which is periodically adjusted by local authorities. In recent years, this limit has typically been around 500 TL per month, though exact figures may change.

If you are:

Sharing one card among multiple travelers

Staying for an extended period

Using Marmaray, Metrobus, or ferries frequently

you may reach this limit faster than expected. Locals rarely encounter this issue, but visitors sometimes do.

Why didn’t my card get a free ride on a public holiday?

Because public holiday gratuities apply only to personalized Istanbulkarts. Anonymous tourist cards are always charged the regular fare, even on national holidays.

This is normal behavior and not a malfunction of the system.

Can I share my Istanbulkart with another traveler?

Yes. One Istanbulkart can be used by multiple passengers, as long as there is enough balance on the card.

However, when using an anonymous/tourist card:

Each ride is charged at the full fare

No transfer discounts are applied

The monthly top-up limit may be reached sooner

For couples or small groups, sharing one card is convenient. For longer stays or heavy daily travel, separate cards — or contactless payment — may be more practical.

Conclusion

Getting around Istanbul may look complicated at first, but once you understand how the system works, it quickly becomes part of the city’s rhythm. Istanbulkart — whether used as a physical card, through the mobile app, or alongside contactless payment — remains the backbone of public transport in Istanbul and the easiest way to move confidently between neighborhoods.

For most visitors, having an Istanbulkart ready early — ideally at the airport or near your accommodation — makes the first days in the city much smoother. At the same time, knowing your alternatives helps you stay flexible, especially for short stays or spontaneous trips. With the basics covered, Istanbul’s transport system stops being something you worry about and starts working quietly in the background.

Galataport, the Istanbul Cruise Port, was redesigned as a wonderful shopping and activity center after many years of restoration. There are many things to do around Galataport, which is located in one of the most beautiful spots in the city.

There are branches of Istanbul’s best restaurants, cafes and Turkish dessert shops inside Galataport. In this way, Galataport functions as a showcase promoting a city famous for its food.

Inside Galataport is the Istanbul Modern Art Museum, one of the city’s most important art centers. In addition, there is another museum where the painting and sculpture collection of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University is exhibited.

With all these features, Galataport has become an important stop among the places to visit in Istanbul. It can take a whole day to see the museums and squares of Galataport and visit the historical monuments around it.

Istanbul Cruise Port (Galataport) Map

As you can see from the Galataport map, Istanbul Cruise Port is located in one of the most central areas of the city. I created the image by processing Google Maps. Although it is primitive, it will give you an idea about the location of Galataport.

The borders of Galataport start from Karakoy, which is the transportation hub of Beyoglu (southwest part of the blue line). The Galaport complex, which continues along the Tophane district, ends before arriving at the Findikli Tram Station (northeast part of blue line).

The part where the light blue extends in the form of a thin and long line includes Galataport’s seaside buildings and walking track. There are hotels, shopping places and the Istanbul Modern Museum on this long line.

On the other hand, in the main part marked with a square, there is the passenger terminal of the Istanbul Cruise Port. In addition, restaurants and cafes of Galataport are located around the terminal.

You can easily find most of the places to visit around Galataport by looking at this map. In the following lines of the article, you can find a list of tourist attractions located around Istanbul Cruise Port (Galataport).

Things to Do in Galataport 2024

Things to do in Galataport include seeing century-old mosques, visiting art galleries, shopping from famous brands and eating at Istanbul’s most famous restaurants.

1. Istanbul Modern Art Museum

Istanbul Modern Art Museum was opened in the early 2000s by transforming an old warehouse by the sea with modern architecture. The most striking work in the museum’s early period was Richard Wentworth‘s design called False Ceiling.

Although Modern Art has a short history in Turkey, it quickly increased its audience and became popular. IKSV (Cultural Foundation) organized many exhibitions to introduce modern art to Istanbulites.

Later, it was decided to rebuild the museum and place it in the center of the Istanbul Cruise Port. The design of the new museum was created by Italian architect Renzo Piano.

Istanbul Modern has been serving at its temporary location on Mesrutiyet Street for several years. However, when the construction of the new museum inside Galataport is completed, the artifacts will also be transferred here.

2. Painting and Sculpture Museum

The Painting and Sculpture Museum is affiliated with the Fine Arts Faculty of Mimar Sinan University. The museum has a large collection starting from the last period of the Ottoman Empire to the end of the 20th century (Republican era).

The museum occupies a building designed by award-winning architects. If you look at the Istanbul Cruise Port from afar, you can easily choose this elegant building with contemporary architecture.

3. Ara Guler Photography Exhibition

Ara Guler Photography Exhibition is a small art gallery that you will come across while wandering the streets of Galataport. This painting exhibition inside a cafe features the works of Turkey’s most important photographer.

Ara Guler gained worldwide fame in the 20th century and became one of the Magnum Photographers. Guler immortalized the 50s and 60s of Istanbul with his black and white photographs.

Ara Guler Photography Museum, dedicated to the artist, is located in Sisli, one of today’s modern districts. However, some paintings from his “Istanbul Harbor” collection can be seen in this small gallery.

4. Nusretiye Mosque

Nusretiye Mosque is an ostentatious 18th century structure that you can see when you look towards the square with the sea behind you. The mosque is the most prominent building in Galataport’s square.

Nusretiye has the sharpest baroque lines among the mosques in Istanbul. The reason for this is that it was made by Mahmud II, who made great reforms in the Ottoman Empire and reorganized the army in the Western order.

Mahmud II realized that the Ottoman Empire was far behind the West in terms of technology and military in the 1700s, and he embarked on a major reorganization. The traces of this westernization can be seen in the architecture of the mosque he had built.

5. Tophane Clock Tower

Tophane Clock Tower is one of the first historical monuments to be seen by those arriving by cruise ship in Istanbul. This Ottoman tower from 1905 adorns the square of Galataport today.

The Clock Tower is one of the works in the large square on the land side of Galataport, and there is the Nusretiye Mosque on one side of the tower, and the Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque on the other.

6. Tophane Fountain

Tophane Fountain is one of the most eye-catching public fountains from the Ottoman period. Back then, those who wanted to do charity work would build fountains in the squares.

Tophane Fountain is located on the southwest side of Galataport Square and is adjacent to Tophane Station of Tram T1, the closest public transportation vehicle to cruise passengers.

7. Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque

Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque is located right next to previous Tophane Fountain. The mosque was built for Ali Pasha, one of the admirals in the peak years of the Ottoman Empire. Ali Pasha, who is of Italian origin, received the title of “Kilic” (sword) because of his boldness.

The most distinctive feature of Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque is that it has the most similar interior to a Byzantine church in Ottoman architecture. The reason for this is that the admiral who built the mosque was a fan of Hagia Sophia.

Istanbul is one of the most important routes of Mediterranean Cruise Ships, and if you are going to participate in this trip, it means you will be on your way to Galataport in Istanbul. You can be sure that you will have a good time here.

Istanbul is a city full of surprises, where history and culture meet at almost every corner. Most visitors begin their journey with iconic landmarks such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace, all conveniently located close to one another in Sultanahmet.
Istanbul Tourist Attractions Map PDF (2026)

This Istanbul Tourist Attractions Map (2026) guide is structured under ten main headings. Under each section, we will explore the city together using the maps I’ve shared. We will begin with Istanbul’s most popular areas, such as Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu, and then gradually expand the circle to include other key neighborhoods and sightseeing areas.

Before we begin, it’s worth noting that these maps are based on publicly available sources. I used official maps published by Beyoğlu Municipality, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Google Maps, and Turkish Airlines as references, and then adapted them specifically for this guide.

The maps you see here are simple, clear, and purpose-driven. While they are not meant to be technical or decorative, they were carefully prepared to highlight exactly what travelers need to see and understand at a glance. They are designed to be practical walking and sightseeing maps, helping visitors build a clear mental picture of the city and its main attractions.

I also created high-resolution PDF versions of these Istanbul tourist maps, detailed enough to be examined closely. Under each section, you’ll find a direct link to download the relevant PDF map. All maps are free to download and easy to use while planning your trip or exploring the city on foot.

Now, let’s begin exploring Istanbul—step by step, map by map.

1. Fatih (Historic Peninsula) and Beyoğlu

Most of Istanbul’s major historical landmarks are located in Fatih (the Historic Peninsula) and Beyoğlu. For this reason, understanding where these two districts are situated is essential for first-time visitors.

The Fatih district, commonly referred to as the Old City or Historic Peninsula, has a history dating back nearly 2,700 years. The eastern hill of the peninsula, where Topkapi Palace stands today, marks the area where the city was first founded in antiquity.

The Historic Peninsula is home to an extraordinary concentration of monuments. Among the most famous are Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and the Grand Bazaar. These iconic sites attract millions of visitors every year and together form the historical showcase of Istanbul.

Beyoğlu, on the other hand, represents a different layer of the city’s past. While it is also a historic district, it features fewer monumental landmarks compared to Fatih. Instead, Beyoğlu is best known for its lively pedestrian streets, shopping areas, cafés, cultural venues, and everyday city life centered around Istiklal Street.

Visitors who spend two or three days in Istanbul usually focus on these two districts. In a short stay, it is possible to visit the major mosques and museums of the Historic Peninsula and explore Beyoğlu and its surroundings on foot.

Beyond Fatih and Beyoğlu, one of the most popular activities is taking a Bosphorus cruise, while travelers with extra time often cross to the Asian Side to visit places like the Kadıköy Fish Market. For many visitors, these areas together define their first impression of Istanbul.

The map above highlights the locations of Fatih and Beyoğlu, clearly showing the Golden Horn (Haliç) as the natural waterway that separates the Historic Peninsula from the relatively newer districts of the city. The Galata Bridge connects these two sides, serving as both a physical link and a symbolic transition between them.

On one side of the bridge lies Eminönü, and on the other Karaköy. Together, these areas reflect Istanbul’s historical development and its long-standing, cosmopolitan food culture.

2. Map of Istanbul Old City (Sultanahmet)

One of the easiest and most efficient ways to travel between Istanbul Old City and Beyoğlu is by using the tram. Thanks to this tram line, it’s possible to reach the main historical monuments of Sultanahmet directly from many parts of the city. The same line also allows visitors to continue toward Dolmabahce Palace, one of the most important landmarks to visit after exploring the Old City.

On the Istanbul Old City tourist map above, you’ll see the tram stops clearly marked in green. Most of the major historical sites in Sultanahmet and its surroundings are located along the route between the Beyazıt and Eminönü tram stops, making this area especially easy to explore on foot.

This walkable concentration is also why many visitors plan to see the area’s most iconic monuments in a single day. Those who want to visit Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, and Topkapi Palace together often prefer to reserve a combo ticket covering all three in advance, especially during spring and summer when ticket lines tend to be longer.

After Eminönü, which marks the final stop within the Old City, the tram crosses the Galata Bridge and enters the Beyoğlu side of the city. In the next map, you’ll see how the tram continues to Karaköy, creating a smooth and practical connection between Istanbul’s historic core and its more modern districts.

Below the map, you’ll find a link to the high-resolution JPG version, which allows you to examine the tram route and nearby attractions in more detail—especially useful for first-time visitors planning their days in the Old City.

Karaköy has become one of Istanbul’s most dynamic districts in recent years. With the opening of new boutique hotels, cafés, restaurants, and galleries, the area has evolved into a lively attraction for visitors. Karaköy’s transformation gained even more momentum with the opening of Galataport, Istanbul’s modern cruise terminal, which is clearly marked on the map.

After Karaköy, the T1 tram line continues along the waterfront and stops at Tophane, home to the historic Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque. The next stop, Fındıklı, is where you’ll find Istanbul Modern, one of the city’s leading contemporary art museums. Kabataş, the final stop on this section of the line, is one of the most important transportation hubs on the Beyoğlu side.

As shown on the Beyoğlu tourist map, Kabataş functions as a key transfer point. From here, you can easily reach Taksim Square via the F1 funicular, or walk to Dolmabahce Palace in just a few minutes.

Taksim Square also marks the beginning of Istiklal Street, Istanbul’s most famous pedestrian avenue. While walking along Istiklal Street, you’ll pass through Galatasaray Square and Tunnel Square, and encounter important cultural stops such as the Pera Museum, the Church of St. Anthony of Padua, and Çiçek Pasajı. By following this same route downhill, it’s also easy to reach Galata Tower, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

Travelers who plan to go up the tower for its panoramic views often prefer to book a Galata Tower entry ticket with audio guide in advance, since entry lines can build up during peak afternoon hours.

4. Golden Horn Bridges

As mentioned earlier, Beyoğlu and Fatih are separated from each other by the Golden Horn. These two districts are connected by three main bridges, all of which play an important role in daily transportation for both locals and visitors.

The first is the historic Galata Bridge. This bridge, which also carries the T1 tram line, is widely used by tourists traveling between the Old City and Beyoğlu. It provides a direct and scenic connection between Eminönü and Karaköy.

Another key crossing is the Atatürk Bridge, also known as the Unkapanı Bridge. From Taksim Square, this bridge can be reached via Tarlabaşı Boulevard, which continues toward the Historic Peninsula. After crossing the Golden Horn, it connects to Unkapanı and then to Atatürk Boulevard, one of the main arteries of the Fatih district.

Along Atatürk Boulevard, you’ll encounter important historical landmarks such as the Valens Aqueduct and the Şehzade Mosque. Nearby are also Zeyrek Mosque (formerly the Church of Christ Pantokrator) and the Süleymaniye Mosque.

The third crossing shown on the map is the Golden Horn Metro Bridge, which is part of the M2 metro line running from Hacıosman to Yenikapı. Thanks to this bridge, travelers coming from Beyoğlu can easily reach the Marmaray line.

Likewise, those starting from the Istanbul Old City can use the M2 metro to reach areas such as Taksim Square, Şişli, and Levent. Many of Istanbul’s major business districts and shopping centers are located along this route, making it an important connection for visitors traveling by metro, taxi, or car.

5. Istanbul Public Transport Map

Istanbul’s metro network has expanded significantly in recent years, making it much easier for visitors to move around the city. With the integration of Marmaray, travel between the European and Asian sides of Istanbul has become faster and more convenient than ever.

Thanks to Marmaray, travelers staying in the Old City can reach Kadıköy in just a few minutes. From there, it’s easy to continue deeper into the Asian Side by transferring to the M4 metro line, which also provides a direct connection to Sabiha Gökçen Airport, Istanbul’s second international airport.

For visitors staying in or around the Historic Peninsula, the M2 metro line plays a key role in daily transportation. From Yenikapı, the M2 line connects the Old City directly to Taksim, Şişli, and Levent—areas known for modern shopping centers, business districts, and hotels. In the past, reaching these parts of the city required multiple transfers, but today the journey is straightforward and efficient.

The M2 line is also especially important for travelers heading to Istanbul Airport, which is located outside the city center. The most practical route for tourists is to take the M2 metro from Yenikapı or Taksim to Gayrettepe, and then transfer to the M11 airport metro line, which runs directly to the airport. This connection makes reaching Istanbul Airport easy for visitors staying both in the Old City and near Taksim.

Together, Marmaray, M2, M4, and M11 form the backbone of Istanbul’s public transport system for travelers. The PDF metro map linked below provides a clear overview of this entire network and is especially useful for first-time visitors planning their routes across the city.

The Istanbul Ferry Map highlights the locations of the city’s main ferry piers. Istanbul’s traditional ferries play an important role in daily transportation, allowing travelers to move easily between the European and Asian sides of the city, as well as enjoy scenic Bosphorus cruises.

On the map above, piers 1, 2, and 5 represent ferries operating Bosphorus sightseeing routes.

Pier 1 refers to Bosphorus cruises operated by Turyol, departing mainly from Eminönü and Karaköy.

Pier 2 marks the official Bosphorus cruise routes run by Şehir Hatları, with departures from Eminönü and nearby piers.

Pier 5 represents Dentur Bosphorus cruises, which typically depart from Kabataş.

If you are interested in Bosphorus cruises, many travelers prefer to reserve a Bosphorus cruise with a stop on the Asian side in advance, or read my full guide on Bosphorus cruise tours in Istanbul for a closer look at the different routes and operators.

Pier 3 symbolizes ferry services departing from Eminönü (Old City) to Üsküdar and Kadıköy on the Asian Side. Although there are separate piers for these routes in reality, they are grouped under a single number on the map for clarity.

Pier 6 represents ferries departing from Beşiktaş to Kadıköy and Üsküdar, another very popular route used by both locals and visitors.

Finally, piers 7 and 8 are located in Üsküdar and Kadıköy, two of the most visited districts on the Asian Side. From these piers, ferries operate regular services back to Beşiktaş and Eminönü, completing the main cross-Bosphorus connections shown on the map.

7. Istanbul Accommodation Map

Choosing where to stay in Istanbul can be challenging. The city offers thousands of hotels spread across very different districts, and each area comes with its own advantages and trade-offs. Popular locations such as Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu, and Beşiktaş appeal to different travel styles, budgets, and expectations.

The Istanbul Accommodation Map highlights the main areas where visitors most commonly choose to stay. On the Historical Peninsula, neighborhoods such as Beyazıt, Sultanahmet, Sirkeci, and Eminönü are known for boutique hotels and easy access to major historical landmarks.

Crossing the Galata Bridge to the north of the Golden Horn, the map marks popular Beyoğlu areas such as Karaköy, Galata, Cihangir, and Taksim Square, which are especially attractive for visitors who enjoy walking, dining, and nightlife.

Along the Bosphorus and further north, districts such as Beşiktaş and Ortaköy offer a lively waterfront atmosphere, while inland areas like Şişli stand out as business and shopping hubs with a wide range of hotels. On the Asian Side, Üsküdar and Kadıköy are also clearly marked.

Beyond accommodation, this map effectively doubles as a tourist attractions map, since many of Istanbul’s most important sights are concentrated within these highlighted districts. For a more detailed comparison of neighborhoods and hotel options, you can explore the full guide on the best places to stay in Istanbul linked on this page.

8. Map of Istanbul Districts

The maps shared so far mainly focused on Istanbul’s most visited tourist areas. The Map of Istanbul Districts offers a much wider perspective, allowing you to see the city beyond the classic sightseeing zones. From a bird’s-eye view, this map shows where different districts are located and how Istanbul extends far beyond its historic and touristic core.

Unlike the previous maps, this one also includes districts along the northern shores of the Bosphorus, where regular city ferries continue toward the Black Sea. Neighborhoods such as Sarıyer on the European Side and Beykoz on the Asian Side are clearly visible, giving a better sense of the city’s full coastline. The map also extends further west and east, making it possible to see areas such as Bağcılar, the final stop of the T1 tram line, which does not appear on most tourist maps.

One point worth clarifying is Atatürk Airport, which still appears on this map. While it is no longer used for commercial flights, it currently serves private and official aviation. The location of the new Istanbul Airport is not shown, but its general position can be understood by looking toward the Kemerburgaz area in the far north.

On the Asian Side, the map reaches well beyond central districts. Areas such as Maltepe and Pendik, where Sabiha Gökçen Airport is located, are clearly marked. Even the Princes’ Islands appear on this map—places that are not always included on standard tourist maps.

Because of its wide coverage, this map is especially useful for travelers coming to Istanbul for business, long stays, or those planning to explore parts of the city beyond the usual tourist routes.

Most of Istanbul’s main tourist attractions are concentrated in five key districts: Fatih, Beyoğlu, Beşiktaş, Üsküdar, and Kadıköy.
This high-resolution sightseeing map, prepared by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, presents the must-see landmarks of these districts through colorful and detailed illustrations.

As a traveler, I have always found illustrated maps easier to read and more engaging. When historical buildings are presented visually, their locations become clearer and more memorable. Landmarks shown almost like artwork tend to attract more attention than plain map symbols.

The Istanbul Sightseeing Map creates exactly this effect. Iconic structures such as mosques, towers, bridges, ferry piers, stadiums, and even train stations are highlighted in a playful and visually rich style. Familiar symbols of the city—like ferries crossing the Bosphorus and seagulls flying above the skyline—are also included, making the map both informative and enjoyable to explore.

The Istanbul Tourist Attractions Map also features light, clean illustrations. Published by Turkish Airlines, this map highlights the most important historical landmarks of Istanbul at a glance.

The map mainly focuses on the Historical Peninsula (Fatih district) and the Beyoğlu area, including Taksim and its surroundings. These are the areas where first-time visitors usually spend most of their time.

If you visit the places marked on this map, you will experience the essential highlights of Istanbul. It includes the must-see sights that define a first visit to the city and help travelers plan their route efficiently.

Of course, visitors who stay longer or return to Istanbul may want to explore more specific neighborhoods and themes. As Istanbul has hosted many civilizations, the city offers a rich, multi-layered history that can be explored step by step.

Istanbul once served as the capital of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires. Travelers can focus on each historical period separately if they wish. For example, concentrating on Byzantine-era landmarks is a popular way to explore the city in more depth.

Most of the popular museums marked on the Istanbul Tourist Attractions Map can be visited using the Museum Pass. For more detailed information, you can also check the Istanbul Museum Pass article.
